Are you ready to turn your interest in environmental issues into a career committed to learning and covering an environmental beat? Are you able to develop relationships with environmental watchdog groups? As the Victoria Advocate's environmental reporter, you will report on environmental issues in the region ranging from petrochemical plants to commercial fishing to oil and gas and air and water quality, among other topics.

In this role you will be able to apply your skills as a curious and dedicated writer. But you must be able to respond quickly and accurately to news as it develops; to dig deep and ask tough questions.

So, what do you get? A close-knit, collegial newsroom with editors ready and willing to mentor you to do your best work. We'll help you develop your social media and mobile reporting skills (photography, video, Facebook Live). You'll learn how to use analytics as a tool to help inform coverage.

Victoria is the largest city in the Crossroads region. Unlike many large metro cities in Texas, residents of Victoria enjoy low cost of living and virtually no traffic congestion, even during rush hour. Just 30 minutes away from the Gulf of Mexico, our residents enjoy easy access to the beach and the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. The Guadalupe River runs through Victoria, providing great opportunities for kayaking and canoeing. Riverside Park is a 660-acre park complete with picnic areas, disc golf, hiking trails, and a boat ramp. Riverside Park is also home of the Victoria Generals, a minor league baseball team. Victoria is conveniently located in south Texas, just a couple of hours away from Houston, Austin, and San Antonio, making weekend getaways to the big city very convenient whenever the mood strikes you.
