Summary

This position will be the point of contact for EH&S within GSS. This position will support the Watertown Manufacturing Operation. This person will function as a leader for the organization and coordinate all EH&S initiatives. This person will act as a specialist and consultant and work with all levels of the organization.

This position exists to prevent accidents, reduce the number of severity of employee injuries, and ensure that the company remains compliant with regulatory agencies or company standards. The position impacts the company's safety culture by developing and maintaining safety standards, programs, procedures and guidelines.

Responsibilities
  • Implement/sustain safety programs to provide the road map to zero injuries and world class performance.
  • Develop, plan, conduct and/or coordinate safety training programs for employees and managers.
  • Coordinate compliance driven safety events such as hearing tests, CPR/First Aid, etc.
  • Promote plant safety by working with all departments to analyze current situation and recommend safety improvements.
  • Track and analyze accident data to identify trends and develop/lead solutions for prevention. Report out to Executive Team and in Management review.
  • Certify employees on forklift operation.
  • Work with outside contractors as required and develop recommendations for continuous improvement.
  • Represent GSS during external safety audits.
  • Conduct risk assessments such as hazard assessments, ergonomic assessments, etc. as needed to reduce workplace injuries. Train and coach onsite personnel.
  • Implement, execute and ensure compliance with GSS EH&S policies and procedures.
  • Maintain all Safety, Environmental and OSHA required records and reports.
  • Lead safety incident investigations, work with Operations and Engineering to develop root cause analysis, and identify corrective actions. Project manage and coordinate implementation of actions which drive continuous improvement. Verify the appropriateness and effectiveness of action plans associated with incidents and audit findings.
  • Partner with HR Manager regarding worker's comp claims and other medical leaves related to safety and manage light duty activities
  • Act as primary interface with regulatory bodies (OSHA, EPA, State/Local Regulators).
  • Actively lead Plant safety audits and cross functional Safety Committee.
  • Recognize and reinforce behaviors which lead to improved safety and reduced accidents.
  • Work with operations to identify Safety program initiatives, gaps, compliance, and effectiveness of programs.
  • Remain knowledgeable and stay current on existing and new regulatory or industry requirements; and provide regulatory interpretation and compliance strategies.
  • Facilitate communication regarding facility safety.
  • Manage and ensure compliance to environmental waste hazards.
  • Review new machine equipment, work with engineering group to ensure machine specifications are appropriate, and sign off for approve regarding safety compliance.
  • Manage monthly Safety Compliance Audits (Safety Team)
  • Train Associates on Safety Procedures
  • Investigate record and prepare safety incident reports. Eliminate and reinforce safety behaviors
  • Ensure a safe working environment
  • Police PPE procedures
  • Champion BSS activities
  • Coordinate On-Site Therapy activities

Experience and Education Requirements
  • BS Degree in a technically related field (i.e. Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Science or other Engineering discipline)
  • 3+ years of experience in EH&S in manufacturing desired

Competencies - Knowledge, skills and characteristics/behaviors
  • Automotive experience a plus.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with ability to influence across all levels of management and drive change.
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • CIH, CSP, CHMM certifications desired.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and collaborative team player.
  • Familiarity w/ Lean Six Sigma principles
  • Continuous Improvement mindset with ability to lead and influence others.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Competence with Microsoft Applications (MS Work, Excel, and Outlook). Minitab experience a plus.
  • Ability to speak Spanish a plus.
