Overview:
Join Central Council of the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska (CCTHITA)'s team of environmental specialists and natural resource professionals this summer! Learn about environmental stewardship, Native land management, and cultural artifact repatriation as the Natural Resources & Environmental Technician Intern. You will spend days outdoors, hiking to field sites and gaining on-the-job training in land management and water sampling techniques throughout Southeast Alaska. You will take part in the management of the tribe's community greenhouse and garden, designed with the mission to help create food sovereignty. You will also learn about the repatriation of cultural artifacts at museums in accordance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA).
This position will be based and primarily take place in-person at the Edward K. Thomas building in Juneau, AK. The intern will travel monthly to Haines, AK, for onsite water sampling projects. The intern may also travel to museums for NAGPRA consultations
Responsibilities:
Learn and perform water sampling on the transboundary rivers and Point Louisa
Assist with management of the greenhouse/gardening
Assist with the recycling program
Assist with repatriation of cultural artifacts at museums
Qualifications:
Qualifications/Requirements:
Interest in the field of Natural Resources, Environmental Science, or Cultural Resources
Physically fit and in demonstrated good health to hike long distances through difficult terrain
Valid Driver's License
Sealaska shareholder, descendent of shareholder, or spouse of shareholder
At least one year of college or vocation technical education
At least 18 years of age
Must be in college or vocational technical school or a recent graduate (1-2 years) working toward a degree in a relevant field to internship position
Legally authorized to work in the United States
Preferred Qualifications:
Study in the field of Natural Resources, Environmental Science, or Cultural Resources
At least a 2.5 GPA
Strong critical thinking and research skills
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Able to both collaborate with a team and work independently
Ability to travel, as needed
Additional Requirements:
Intern must provide copy of a valid driver's license and proof of insurance for use of company car.

Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment: Frequent and extended periods in remote, outdoor settings sometimes with difficult terrain. Daily hiking distances may sometimes be in excess of three miles total.
