Postdoctoral Fellow in Molecular Biology

The Division of Gynecologic Oncology in the Department of OB/GYN at Brigham and Women's Hospital seeks a post-doctoral fellow with experience in molecular biology to join the Elias Laboratory. The work requires familiarity with CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing and cloning techniques. Brigham and Women's Hospital is a Harvard Medical School-affiliated teaching Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. The Elias Laboratory studies gynecologic cancers with a strong translational component. As a physician-led laboratory, we focus on aspects of disease development that may aid in early diagnosis or produce novel therapies. Our research includes work with fresh human tissue specimens as well as mouse and in vitro models.

The post-doctoral fellow will focus on two main areas of research, both involving a novel nanoparticle delivery system for gene therapy developed by the Elias Laboratory: 1) the use of non-coding RNAs for ovarian cancer therapy, and 2) manipulation of DNA repair pathways to sensitize ovarian cancer cells to novel agents. Prior experience with animals models is required. Prior experience with cancer nanotechnology is not assumed and can be provided by the Elias Laboratory. The laboratory works in an interdisciplinary manner with collaborators at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Harvard Medical School. Thus the ideal candidate should feel comfortable presenting to a group and working with scientists across a broad range of backgrounds. Novel approaches and creative solutions are actively encouraged and fundamental to the laboratory's character.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The postdoctoral experience provides individuals who have completed a doctoral degree with a full-time program of advanced academic preparation and research training under the guidance of a supervising faculty mentor. Postdoctoral appointments are temporary by nature and are designed to develop the postdoctoral scholar as an independent scientist and to enhance their professional skills in academia. Postdoctoral Scholar positions are typically subject to the availability of funds and are not eligible for layoff or recall status.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

This position differs from the service professional position of Research Associate in that it is temporary in nature and may not last more than four years after the initial appointment and functions under the direction of principal investigators (PIs). This position differs from classified staff research positions in that typically greater education and experience is required, and projects tend to be more complex and wider in scope.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Data collection, processing and analysis
* Assists faculty researchers and other collaborators, or may act independently, in planning and designing research experiments; establishing priorities and recommending schedules, time tables and costs.
* Presentation of project results to internal and external parties.
* Operates specialized scientific equipment.
* Performs statistical analyses, including selecting the appropriate analysis procedure, setting up data for analysis, judging validity and reliability of data, designing and writing programs to perform analyses, and producing written reports on the result of the analyses.
* Effectively uses available technology to facilitate the success of the project.
* Liaisons with other departments, outside collaborators, and others to ensure success of project.
* Engaged in writing of technical publications and reports.
* Supervise fellows, graduate assistants, or student employees.

May be responsible for training staff, graduate assistants, or student employees

* The postdoctoral fellow will be responsible for performing experiments in the laboratory which will include basic molecular biology techniques for DNA, RNA and protein manipulation, tissue culture, in situ hybridization, and immunoprecipitation.
* Significant experience with cloning and transfection is required.
* Prior experience with animals models is required.
* Candidates must be fluent in English.
* A writing sample is required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Requires a PhD by the time of appointment. Recent graduates or candidates anticipating graduation are welcomed to apply. Candidates should prepare at least 2 letters of reference, including one from a PhD thesis adviser or current supervising Principal Investigator.
