Persephone Biosciences is an emerging company investigating the impact of the gut microbiome on human disease, and developing live therapeutic products aimed at disease treatment and prevention. We are located at the JLABS incubator in San Diego, CA, and are a Y Combinator Startup Investment alum. We are currently seeking a scientist to provide leadership in the areas of immunology and cell biology, helping to unravel the complex interactions between the gut microbiome and the immune system. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of a clinical development candidate by designing and executing in vitro experiments and immunological profiling assays. In addition, this individual will provide guidance during pre-clinical animal studies and translation into human trials. The successful candidate will express independence, leadership, and enthusiasm in support of accomplishing company goals.

Job responsibilities are as follows:
  • Provide leadership and guidance within the company in all aspects of immunology, cancer biology, and hematology.
  • Provide experimental design and interpret results from flow cytometry, single cell RNAseq, CyTOF, or other immunological profiling of mammalian blood and tissue samples.
  • Develop testable hypothesis on mechanism of microbial interaction with the host immune system, and identify biomarkers indicative of immunological phenotypes.
  • Perform cell-based assays to determine the effect of various compounds on lymphocyte function.
  • Design, coordinate, and manage animal studies, serving as the primary point of contact with the contract research organization performing the experiments.
  • Maintain expertise in the field through literature and conferences, ensuring that the company is using the most current techniques.
  • Communicate results in oral and written form, including internal and external presentations, manuscripts, patent applications, and regulatory documents.

Requirements:
  • PhD in Immunology, Cancer Biology, or related field.
  • Postdoc or industry experience preferred but not required (title and salary will be based on experience level).
  • Demonstrated success in designing, analyzing, and interpreting results from immunological profiling experiments.
  • Practical knowledge of flow cytometry, mammalian cell culture, assay development, and biomarker discovery.
  • Knowledge of immuno-oncology preferred.
  • Experience translating discovery research into clinical applications a plus, but not required.
  • Innovative and independent scientific thinking, leadership, and enthusiasm.
