Syros Pharmaceuticals is seeking a skilled cell and molecular biologist to join a dynamic drug discovery team of biologists, biochemists and chemists focused on small molecule gene control drugs for cancer. The successful candidate will have deep experience with identification and molecular assessment of protein complexes and assays to detect protein-inhibitor interactions. This laboratory-based role will require creativity in applying molecular and cellular biology methods to identify compounds with on-target activity, and to define small molecule mechanism of action.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct small molecule inhibitor studies to determine drug-target interactions
  • Determine cellular effects of small molecule inhibitors including cell proliferation and apoptosis assays
  • Work with computational biologists to interpret genomic, epigenomic and transcriptional datatypes including ChIP-seq and RNA-seq
  • Develop disease-relevant cellular models using CRISPR-mediated gene editing
  • Discover molecular mechanisms underpinning disease cell state and small molecule action using RNAi and CRISPR-based methods
  • Collaborate within a cross-functional team to integrate biology, biochemistry and chemistry efforts to develop novel small molecule drug candidates and understand their mode of action

Success Factors
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams in a matrix environment
  • Creativity and rigor in experimental design and execution
  • Independent thinking, experimentation, and analysis
  • Strong communication skills and ability to share ideas and information with colleagues at multiple levels of the organization
  • Attention to detail and good record keeping
  • Strong desire to impact the lives of cancer patients

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Cell/Molecular Biology with a minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience; Master's Degree in Cell/Molecular Biology with a minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience; or a Ph.D. in Cell/Molecular Biology
  • Proven core competency in cellular and molecular biology techniques including CRISPR, RNAi, vector cloning and lentiviral delivery.
  • Demonstrated capabilities in quantitative analysis of molecular and cellular biology data
  • Ability to design, execute and analyze experiments to elucidate small molecule effects on protein complexes
  • Experience in cell culture models and sterile culture techniques
  • Experience in drug discovery, cancer biology and mechanisms of gene/genomic regulation is a plus

Candidates who are keen experimentalists, independent thinkers, and enthusiastic team players that have a passion for drug discovery and elucidating novel biology are encouraged to apply. Please send a resume and cover letter to careers@syros.com.

Finally, the candidate will need to embrace our values:

As one team, strengthened by our diversity, we:
  • Value each day of patients' lives
  • Operate with integrity and respect
  • Inspire excellence in all
  • Communicate transparently
  • Embrace big challenges
