The San Marcos Aquatic Resources Center (SMARC) Edwards Aquifer Refugia Program (EARP) is dedicated to the conservation of endangered species endemic to the San Marcos and Comal Rivers and the Edwards Aquifer. The SMARC EARP works with multiple partners to build a functional refugia to house a representative population of priority endangered species. Species held on station include aquatic salamanders, invertebrates, Fountain Darters, and Texas Wild Rice. If a catastrophic event resulting in the loss of habitat or species occurred, the SMARC EARP would have an assurance population of species on station for reintroduction. The EARP is looking for an intern to inventory historical fountain darter samples for research in genetic assessments of historical and contemporary fountain darter populations. Duties include inventory and catalog of preserved tissues, logging tissue sample information into a database, tissue dissection, and preparing a portion of the historical samples for DNA extraction. If internship time allows, the selection SCA intern will complete DNA extractions on a portion tissue samples. Candidates need to be familiar with using electronic forms and databases such as Survey123 and Excel or Access. Ideal candidates are attentive to detail, organized, and have the ability to work independently.This position provides:Living Allowance $480 per weekThis position does NOT provide housing. AmeriCorps Education Award available upon successful completion of this position is $1,678.57. *All allowances subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes. It is SCA's policy that all AmeriCorps-required background checks must return cleared results prior to the position's start; this includes being fingerprinted for the FBI check. Otherwise, the AmeriCorps award will be removed or the position's start date will be delayed due to non-compliance.
