The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is offering prescribed fire corps crew member positions in Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, and Florida from Jan 2022 - May 2022 (exact dates to be determined). Crew members will work under a crew leader to assist with prescribed burns working with the U.S. Forest Service or The Nature Conservancy, depending on location. When conditions are not ideal for burning, members will assist the partner with other projects including vegetation removal, fire line preparation, equipment maintenance, and other work duties. In addition, members will receive job training, personal development, and natural resource management skills while working with these partners. Certification includes:
+ Fire Training (Red Card, S-130, S-190)
+ Wilderness First Aid (WFA) or Wilderness Medicine Essentials (WME)
+ CPR
+ Chainsaw Training (S-212) - tentative
Compensation includes:
+ $300 - $350/week living allowance, depending on placement site
+ A one-time $650 travel allowance
+ Meals (during work days) and housing
+ Eligibility for an AmeriCorps education award worth $1,538.36
Placement sites include:
+ Kisatchie National Forest (Pineville, LA) / US Forest Service
+ Davy Crockett National Forest (Kennard, TX) / US Forest Service
+ Disney Wilderness Preserve (Poinciana, FL) / The Nature Conservancy
+ Splinter Hill Bog Preserve - Roving (Montgomery, AL) / The Nature Conservancy (CAMPING CREW)
Requirements:
+ All members are required to pass an arduous pack test to participate in the program. This includes walking 3 miles with a 45-pound weighted vest in under 45 minutes. Members that do not pass the pack test will be dismissed from the program. In addition, prescribed burning is condition-dependent and members may be required to work long hours and/or weekends depending on direction from the partner.
+ Required to demonstrate full vaccination status for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) with a Foodand Drug Administration (FDA) authorized or FDA-approved COVID-19 vaccine;ORReceive from SCA a reasonable accommodation granting an exemption from vaccine requirementsbased on a medical disability or because of a sincerely held religious belief. Additional information andinstructions regarding how to request a reasonable accommodation will be provided at the time ofselection.
NOTE: Priority will be given to members that are currently living or looking to work in Gulf coast states (TX, LA, MS, AL, and FL). Applicants will be placed at a site based on their preference, experience, and qualifications. Applicants will be accepted on a rolling basis, but those submitted by Oct 2021 will be given priority. Interviews will start in Oct 2021.
