The BMS Immuno-Oncology and Cell Therapy Thematic Research Center is dedicated to research supporting development of novel cellular therapies. Our goal is to revolutionize medicine by re-engaging the body's immune system to treat cancer.

The Cell Therapy Preclinical Biology team is looking for a highly motivated immunologist to help us deliver on this critical goal.


Position Summary


The candidate will have responsibility for designing, performing, and communicating in vitro preclinical studies to support CAR/eTCR cell therapy research and development in the Immune Oncology and Cell Therapy Thematic Research Center. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and executing in vitro studies that identify and optimize T cell therapeutic candidates and for producing subsequent IND-enabling study reports. A strong background in T cell biology or immunology and an in-depth conceptual understanding of tumor-associated T cell biology are required, and experience in synthetic biology (especially related to receptor biology and/or genetic circuits), gene editing, and/or genomics/proteomics are desirable. Activities include in-depth characterization of primary human T cell responses (cytokines, proliferation, cytotoxicity, etc.), comparison and optimization of novel binding elements, development of novel T cell engineering approaches geared towards tumor microenvironment evasion, cancer model development, and generation and analysis of data that support IND-enabling study reports.


Responsibilities include and are not limited to:


o Lead the pre-clinical development of novel CAR/eTCR T cell therapies, including identification of novel binding elements, integration of novel engineering approaches, and completion of mechanistic studies

o Develop rigorous in vitro cancer models with the goal of providing insight into the function of novel CAR/eTCR T cell therapies in in vivo contexts

o Identify and conceive of novel methods and tools for improving T cell engineering/characterization workflows and for improving the function of engineered T cells

o Apply extensive knowledge of T cell biology, including activation pathways, signaling pathways, and T cell differentiation, to assess and improve engineered T cell function

o Manage and/or coordinate project workflows

o Clearly communicate study design and data in verbal and written forms and in a timely manner

o Prepare high-quality data packages for internal team meetings, external scientific reports, patent applications, and Investigational New Drug applications

o Act as a functional mentor to team members, especially more junior colleagues

o Represent the project team/sub-team in meetings and work with collaborators, both external and internal


Qualifications:


o PhD in immunology, immune-oncology, or tumor immunology with 0-6 years of successful postdoctoral or industry experience, or a BS/MS with extensive industry experience in immunology that would fit the job qualifications. Level consideration will be determined based on prior experience.

o Expertise in T cell isolation, transduction, and expansion and related cell culture techniques

o Experience with in vitro technologies typically employed to assess T cell functionality, including and not limited to MSD, IncuCyte-based assays, imaging and multi-parameter flow cytometry for immuno-phenotyping, and T cell activation and proliferation analyses

o T cell biology expertise, especially the ability to apply skills, experience, and theoretical knowledge from relevant literature to shape the scientific direction of and approach on projects.

o Skilled at recognizing problems and then recommending/developing appropriate solutions

o Self-motivation and the ability to focus/prioritize work and projects with project management-oriented thinking and a growth-oriented mindset

o Ability to work productively both as a team member and as an individual contributor

o Strong interpersonal skills and willingness to collaborate within cross-functional teams; skilled at listening to and coordinating with colleagues in a matrixed environment.

o Ability to conceptualize and communicate the broader impact of personal activities to other projects and teammates


Additional desired qualifications:


o Expertise in synthetic biology (especially related to receptor biology and/or genetic circuits), and/or gene editing, and/or genomics/proteomics is highly desirable.

o Strong quantitative and analytical skills are desirable, especially with respect to analysis and interpretation of complex datasets and/or biochemical mechanisms

o Expertise developing assays with CAR T or TCR T cells

o Expertise with high throughput screens, CRISPR screens, high-throughput functional T cell analysis, and experimental automation
