Responsibilities
POSITION SUMMARY :
Provides assistance to the Fire Marshal and Fire Safety Specialists in the development and implementation of a University-wide fire safety program.
MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT USED :
Combustible gas indicator, breathing apparatus, fire extinguishers and hoses, hydrostatic testing equipment and other related technology equipment of lower or comparable complexity. Also uses personal computer.
TYPICAL DUTIES :
+ Tests existing fire protection equipment (smoke detectors, head detectors, pull station, audio/visual devices, voice evacuation, elevator recall, supervisory, etc.) for compliance with predetermined University and regulatory standards as directed by Fire Safety Specialist or Fire Marshal.
+ Inspects and maintains University fire extinguishers in accordance with local, state, and national codes and standards.
+ Performs annual fire extinguisher inspections and coordinate the 6 year maintenance and 5 or 12 year hydrostatic vendor testing.
+ Tests existing fire protection equipment (standpipes, 2" main drain, wet/dry pipe sprinklers, pre-action, etc.) for compliance with predetermined University and regulatory standards as directed by Fire Safety Specialist or Fire Marshal.
+ Tests existing fire protection equipment (weekly and annual fire pumps, and hydrants) for compliance with predetermined University and regulatory standards as directed by Fire Safety Specialist or Fire Marshal.
+ Perform monthly fire protection valve inspections and semi-annual testing of valve tampers.
+ Performs quarterly fire department connection inspections.
+ Performs monthly kitchen fixed system inspections and escort and support the fixed system vendor inspection and testing of fixed systems.
+ Responds to chemical spills, controls situation and implements clean-up activities, files report of the incident and recommends preventive measures.
+ Conducts fire detection or suppression systems disconnect and reconnect as directed by the Fire Safety Specialist or Fire Marshal.
+ Maintains current familiarity with applicable codes and standards.
+ Prepares routine and special reports on assigned activities. Maintains computer files of tests, inspections and incidents and equipment inventories.
QUALIFICATIONS :
Associate degree in Fire Science; 2 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have own transportation with current registration and valid driver's license. Within 1 year of appointment be qualified to test fire alarm systems as permitted by National Fire Protection Association 72, National Fire Alarm Code, for inspection, testing and maintenance of fire alarm systems by certification as Fire Alarm Systems NICET Level 1.
