Job Description

Research Assistant 2-B/H to assist and support scientific investigation to study innate immune mechanisms, particularly those related to intracellular nucleic acid sending pathways in the laboratory of Dr. Nagaraj Kerur, in the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Science. These pathways are being investigated both within the broad context of addressing fundamental questions in immunology as well as to develop deeper understanding of the sterile inflammation in degenerative conditions such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma and Alzheimer's disease (AD). This role independently conducts assigned experiments; performs a variety of molecular, cellular, and biological research techniques and procedures including PCR reactions, gel electrophoresis, assays, cell cultures and Northern and Western analysis; sorts and processes tissue and blood samples; tests and evaluates current procedures; performs routine procedures on lab animals; records, consolidates and assists with analysis of research results; assists in evaluating validity of data obtained from experimental procedures; summarizes data for inclusion in grant proposals and manuscripts; prepares research progress reports; assists principal investigator with the preparation of publications, manuscripts, articles, posters, and abstracts; conducts library research on requested topics through researching current literature; oversees and maintains accurate records of laboratory activities; assists with training of junior research staff, and undergraduate and graduate students in research methods and equipment operation; sets up and operates laboratory equipment; monitors research supply, including specimens, inventory and initiates procurement requests as needed.

Education/Experience A Bachelor's degree in a biological/health science, or related science or an equivalent combination of education is required. Ability to translate, adapt and apply academic or practical knowledge in the conduct of biological/health science research is required. Experience in a wet lab, research in a related science capacity, working with mice or rats, cell or tissue cultures & molecular biology is highly preferred.

Requires successful completion of a background check. Qualified candidates may be requested to complete a pre-employment physical including a drug screen
