Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as an Associate Director, Therapeutics Alliances.

NYULH Therapeutics Alliances (previously known as the Office of Therapeutics Alliances, or OTA) is a unique drug discovery accelerator and business development engine whose mission is to de-risk NYU therapeutic projects to enable greater partnerships with biopharma, investors and nonprofits. Therapeutics Alliances utilizes a novel approach by operating akin to a virtual biotech simultaneously providing (a) funding, (b) access to a global network of CROs and seasoned ex-biopharma veteran consultants, (c) workplan development and project management, and (d) conducting the necessary business development on its pipeline to maximize the likelihood of successful exits. In essence, each project is advanced as a nimble, one-asset startup where the scientific and business operations are completely interwoven. Since inception 7 years ago, Therapeutics Alliances has worked on 40 projects across target discovery, target validation, hit finding, and early hit to lead optimization. To date, 11 projects have been successfully partnered with either biopharmas or new startups. We are seeking to fill an Associate Director, Therapeutics Alliances position to provide operational support for realizing Therapeutics Alliances scientific and business development goals, and helping achieve the overall vision of Therapeutics Alliances.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Oversee management of both internally and externally-funded activities, including due diligence efforts for new, potential projects, drug discovery operations, identification and approval of new CROs/consultants, in conjunction with Therapeutics Alliances team members.
  • Extensive and deep engagement with faculty with respect to understanding and assessing their biomedical research for translational and product development potential.
  • Participate in business development and patenting efforts on Therapeutics Alliances projects including related of invention disclosure review processes, patenting, marketing, engaging and negotiating agreements with industry, investors and nonprofits.
  • Manage Therapeutics Alliances finances, budgeting, reporting efforts and other administrative duties
  • Participate in efforts to increase visibility of Therapeutics Alliances program and projects to industry, investors and nonprofits as a model for academic drug discovery.
  • Support Therapeutics Alliances efforts on grant writing, targeting relevant funding opportunities from funding sources (for-profit, non-profit and government) for project support, and, alongside Industrial Liaison and/or Sponsored Programs Administration, develop new grant agreements on Therapeutics Alliances projects with nonprofits.
  • Engage Therapeutics Alliances Internal and External Advisory Board on program/project updates, organize in-person Board meetings at NYULMC, plan agenda and direct team presentations, recruit notable new members for Internal and External Advisory Board as needed.
  • Strategic engagement with Development office to bring in philanthropic support to Therapeutics Alliances program, including contributing to the creation of vision plans, business plans, presentations, etc., to potential philanthropists, proactively identifying candidate philanthropic individuals or organizations with keen interest in supporting academic translational efforts.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Additional Position Specific Responsibilities:
Experience in working and managing preclinical CROs and consultants Very strong scientific acumen, curiosity and skills to assess basic academic science to craft translational strategies. Experiences in developing translational grant proposals Experience working with life science investors, biopharma business development and partnerships with disease foundations. Strong interpersonal, leadership and communication skills (written, oral, presentation skills) including excellence in marketing drug discovery projects to a wide variety of targets. Strengths in assessing early stage biomedical intellectual property and participation in patent prosecution efforts. Proficiency in dealmaking and licensing activities with respect to early stage biomedical projects. Strengths in mentoring, coaching and managing of Therapeutics Alliances team members as well as interns and entrepreneurs.

Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a PhD in Biomedical Sciences with 5-7 years leadership experiences in drug discovery operations and related business development, preferably in a biopharma or investor environment although similar experiences in academic/nonprofit settings are also highly encouraged to apply.
