The histology technician is responsible for preparing microscopic slides for histological diagnosis. The candidate must be well versed in medical terminology, the principles of histological sectioning, histology staining techniques, and the operation of histology equipment. Also, this individual must understand and utilize aseptic techniques and biospecimen safety while performing duties in the preparation, dissection, processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining of tissue specimens. In addition to basic histology duties, this individual will also be required to perform more complex testing or sectioning projects such as histology diagnostic stains, immunohistochemical testing, cryosectioning, serial sectioning, and must have the capability to track and monitor their progression of such testing and/or projects.

Responsibilities

  • Routine microtomy, cryotomy, and H&E staining
  • Perform specimen labeling, handling, preservation, processing, and tracking
  • Exercise proper embedding techniques of paraffin infiltrated tissue specimens
  • Participate in daily equipment preventative maintenance procedures
  • Maintain an adequate level of inventory as required by the histology department
  • Adhere to quality control and documentation policies and assist in the performance of quality control and calibration verification procedures
  • Ability to execute complex testing or sectioning projects upon request
  • Prepare solutions and reagents required for special stains or immunohistochemistry staining
  • Perform special or immunohistochemical staining procedures
  • Contribute and participate in quality improvement initiative efforts
  • Effectively interact with internal and external customers regarding order requests
  • Cross-train within adjacent departments as assigned
  • Adherence to all OSHA/MiOSHA specimen processing and handling requirements
  • Perform work tasks by the use of Laboratory Information System ex: BSI
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Requirements
  • Required
    • Associates in Applied Science or BA in Biology or basic science-related field
    • License, Certification and/or Registration: HT/HTL or Registry eligible by ASCP, (required within one year of start date)
    • Clinical experience as a component of a program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS)
  • Preferred
  • Three (3) years of recent histology experience in a clinical laboratory setting

Physical Demands:
  • Position requires sitting and/or standing for long periods of time
  • Ability to lift items that weigh up to 25 pounds
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet time and quality-based objectives
  • Repetitive work

Working Conditions:
  • Occasionally required to work evenings, weekends
  • Daily contact with dry ice and liquid nitrogen vapor
  • Contact with human biological specimens and sharps daily
  • HepB vaccination and TB bacteria testing is required (other vaccination or testing as recommended)
    • Proof immunization or waiver is acceptable
