Responsible for the overall direction, operations and performance of Orthopaedic Research Laboratories. Plans, organizes, and manages section activities and personnel.
Responsibilities: A listing of the key responsibilities
  • Organizes and directs the daily activities of a translational/preclinical orthopaedic research laboratory in the Department of Orthopaedics.
  • Maintains a clean, well-supplied and regulated BSL-2 laboratory environment suitable for wet-lab and dry-lab procedures, acute and survival animal surgery, and engineering fabrication space.
  • Assists in maintaining a BSL-2 room in coordination with the institutional vivarium (CCMR), to house infectious diseases (e.g., S. aureus) and utilizes these agents in animal models of orthopaedic trauma.
  • Carries out animal studies and procedures, tasks associated with animal care and husbandry, some of which may require being on call.
  • Performs laboratory activities necessary for cell culture including but not limited to the maintenance of host cell lines, the preparation of media and basic, routine testing of mammalian cell lines.
  • Assists in the supervision of laboratory personnel, graduate students and medical research students.
  • Conducts and oversees quality assurance and quality control.
  • Collects, analyzes, and interprets lab results.
  • Prepares and submits regulatory documents to the institutional animal care and use committee.
  • Works with principle investigators and coinvestigators to develop laboratory standard operating procedures.
  • Maintains study and regulatory documentation.
  • Provides education and support to other lab members about instrumentation, biosafety level equipment and facilities, and other laboratory practices.
  • Acts as a liaison between principal investigators, regulatory agencies, D-H stakeholders, animal facility veterinarians and staff.
  • Should be familar with the following tests: PCR, ELISA, Flow Cytometry, and Tissue Culture of cell lines.
  • Travels to investigator meetings and study training.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

  • Minimum Qualifications:
    • Registered Medical Technologist with 5 years of laboratory experience including 2 years in a supervisory or lead position.
    • Master's degree preferred.
    • Familiarity with regulatory agencies affecting laboratories required.
    • CPT & ICD-9 coding experience and Medicare reimbursement knowledge desired.
    Required Licensure/Certification Skills: Registered Medical Technologist with 5 years of laboratory experience including 2 years in a supervisory or lead position
