This role will provide exposure to complex situations and will require analytical and problem solving skills. Description:
JOB DESCRIPTION:Function as a technical resource, performing complex assays and providing training and mentoring to other HLA staff.Performs standardized and high-complexity histocompatibility testing on various types of clinical samples.May perform tests in one scientific discipline or perform selected tests in multiple disciplines (crosstrain DNA/serology).Tests may include: HLA antibody screen and identification, crossmatching, typing, and engraftment monitoring. Analyze and evaluate results, and generate and evaluate clinical reports. Contribute to sample processing, test preparation, testing results, and generate reports.Serve as a technical resource for lower level technologist. Train and mentor other HLA technologist.Evaluates the validity of test results according to transplant program needs and confirms results by alternative methods.May evaluate new technologies and make recommendations on new acquisitions and/or upgrades of instrumentation and software. Participate in quality assurance and quality control data.Uses knowledge of various complex laboratory techniques and procedures to generate quantitative and qualitative observations and initiate problem solving processes if indicated.Participate in equipment maintenance, instrumentation calibration, quality control and documentation, and monitor levels of supplies and equipment.Must be able to take on-call assignments for nights, holidays, and weekends on a rotating basis. Other duties may also be assigned.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Bachelor's degree in medical technology or a chemical, physical or biological science. Other bachelor's degree will be accepted if graduated from an accredited school of medical technology or if science and math coursework meet requirement of certifying agency. Bachelor's degree may be waived for a medical technologist who was ASCP certified in the years prior to the bachelor's degree requirement by ASCP and a HEW/HHS technologist certified by Health and Human Services.Two years of medical technology or HLA experience. (Medical Laboratory Technician experience is pro-rated).Certification by one of the following accreditation agencies: MT (ASCP), MLS(ASCP) or categorical, MT(NCA), MT(AMT), MT(HHS or HEW), CHT(ABHI), CHS(ABHI). PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (Medium): 20-50 lbs; 0-33% of the work day (occasionally); 11-25 lbs, 34-66% of the workday (frequently); 01-10 lbs, 67-100% of the workday (constantly); Lifting 50 lbs max; Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs; Occasional to frequent standing & walking, Occasional sitting, Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing), Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks. ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Factors affecting environment conditions may vary depending on the assigned work area and tasks. Environmental exposures include, but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure Bio-hazardous waste Chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors Communicable diseases Electrical shock, Floor Surfaces, Hot/Cold Temperatures, Indoor/Outdoor conditions, Latex, Lighting, Patient care/handling injuries, Radiation, Shift work, Travel may be required. Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators, environmental conditions may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.
