General Overview of the Position Under the supervision of the Recreation Program Specialist, the Early Childhood Program Instructor is responsible for the instruction and supervision of participants in the program. The instructor will engage Early Childhood participants through a variety of activities including, large motor activities, creative art, singing, colors, shapes, following directions, meeting new friends, rhythmic activities, stories and creative dramatics. See below for time specifics (Times and dates are subject to change to accommodate instructor availability): These programs will run Mondays-Fridays 8:30am - 12:30pm June 13th - August 19th. Staff training will run June 1st - 10th. The ideal candidate will continue the Early Childhood programs year-round with the Recreation Department. Examples of Essential Duties * Responsible for class set-up and clean-up of program areas. * Responsible for the overall supervision and daily class functions of a group of children. * Creates a lesson plan and daily schedule. * Ensures a safe playing environment for participants. * Observes, enforces and explains all facility rules and regulations. * Answer parents questions/concerns before and after the program. * Report problems or needs to management. * Report to work at least 15 minutes prior to class and stay until all participants have left. * Attend all in-service training programs and be aware of all facility procedures. * Communicate equipment and/or supply needs with management. * All other duties as may be assigned. Minimum Qualifications * Possess an interest in working with/instructing children ages 2-5. * Knowledge of age-appropriate activities and child development philosophies and practices. * Knowledge of safety requirements pertaining to young children. * Knowledge of innovative lesson planning for children between ages of 2-5 years * Ability to keep simple records and reports, and work from oral and written directions. * Previous instructing, coaching and/or teaching preferred. * Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. * Ability to communicate effectively, courteously and tactfully with participants, parents, staff, city officials and the public. * Ability to present a positive image of the department and the City.
