Ashland has an exciting opportunity for a Staff Scientist: Advanced Parenteral Dosage Form Characterization to join our Life Sciences business at our Wilmington, DE site. This is a very visible, significant role and will report to Sr. Team Leader.

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Lead characterization and analytical testing for advanced parenteral dosage forms including nanoparticles, gels, implants across a variety of drug substance types (proteins, peptides, nucleic acids and small molecules)
  • Develop and execute characterization and analytical testing procedures such as stability and dissolution testing of advanced parenteral dosage forms
  • Plan, design, and execute protocols; record, interpret and report results for complex studies.
  • Integrate analytical testing and characterization with formulation development.
  • Lead development of testing procedures and creation of SOPs
  • Ensure lab documentation that conforms with company quality systems and partner expectations.
  • Provide recommendations to management on key technical capabilities needed for testing and characterization of biologic APIs
  • Actively contribute to the organizational goals by taking initiative, executing on goals and focusing on performance and safety
  • Improve the organization capacity and capabilities through building collaborative relationships, optimizing diverse talent and utilizing positive communications and influence with others


In order to be qualified for this role, you must possess the following:

  • PhD/MS in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry or other relevant fields with 2+ years of experience in the analysis and characterizations of biologic drug substances (proteins, peptides and nucleic acids)
  • Significant experience in the development of analytical testing and characterization of pharmaceutical products and polymers
  • Extensive hands-on experience in analytical instrumentation including HPLC, UV-Vis, NMR, LC/MS
  • Highly motivated individual who values creativity and collaboration
  • Possess strong oral and written communication capabilities
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills
  • Enthusiastic about problem solving in a fast-paced working environment
  • Demonstrated responsible and ethical behavior at all times
  • The ability to help the company drive greater value through understanding the business, making complex decisions and creating the new and different


The following skill sets are preferred by the business unit:

  • Working experience on the characterization of polymeric or lipidic nanoparticles
  • Working experience with biodegradable polymers
  • Familiar with particle sizing and image analyses
  • Familiar with solid state characterization and thermal analysis such as PXRD and DSC
