Cemvita Factory is a biotech and synthetic biology startup with a mission to decarbonize heavy industry - a Carbon Negative and Climate Positive vision. Founded in 2017 in Houston and now expanded to Denver in 2020, the company is engineering microbes in a Microbes-as-a-Service platform model to use carbon dioxide as a feedstock to produce an array of carbon negative processes and industrial chemicals. Cemvita's microorganisms capture and convert CO2 into chemicals and alternative fuels, helping heavy industry decarbonize. The potential market for Cemvita Factory's engineered microbes, biomining processes or bio-manufactured chemical intermediates, is enormous.

The Opportunity

We are seeking candidates with experience and expertise in both molecular biology and bioinformatics to join our Mining Biotechnology team in Denver. You will be responsible for nucleotide and ‘omics analyses in support of a range of mining biotechnology projects. As part of our team, you will have the opportunity to innovate, supervise, interact with diverse stakeholders, contribute to the strategic implementation of ‘omics technology, and move our company towards its goal of de-carbonizing heavy industry through application of biotechnology.

  • Develop/optimize RNA/DNA isolation protocols from rock samples
  • Perform targeted/un-targeted quantitative/non-quantitative amplification
  • Liaise with sequencing facilities
  • Use bioinformatic tools and techniques to curate, design, and process environmental and enrichment sequence/omics datasets
  • Serve as expert on appropriate molecular techniques to address project goals
  • Effectively communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical collaborators
  • Identify core challenges in complex situations, explain tradeoffs, and incorporate feedback to make decisions
  • Work with wet lab scientists to independently design experiments and communicate conclusions for internal review
  • Develop reproducible analysis for research and development purposes

  • Bring expertise, humility, and a strong intellectual curiosity to our overall mission of reducing the carbon footprint associated with heavy industrial processes including mining
  • Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Synthetic Biology, Environmental/Biological Engineering, or similar
  • 5-7 years post-graduate work in a mixed wet/computational professional environment
  • Experience with nucleic acid extraction from various/challenging environmental and/or engineered samples
  • 3+ years experience designing, optimizing protocols for quantitative real time PCR on specific genes of interest
  • 3+ years experience with bioinformatic dataset curation, pipeline assembly, custom tool design, integration into established pipelines (familiarity with standard tools in metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, 16S rRNA gene based community analysis and functional prediction)

Nice to have
  • Prior experience at a biotech startup
  • Prior experience with Nanopore/MinIon hardware
  • Notable record of publications and/or patents
  • Tinkerer mindset, comfort with disassembly and reassembly of instrumentation/equipment
