Overview:
Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine is searching for a Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator. The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Coordinator is dedicated to supporting the medical schools mission of conducting research, education, and clinical care in a safe and healthy environment. Under the supervision of the Assistant Dean for Research Compliance, Incumbent is responsible for providing education and guidance on environmental health and safety issues, including work practices and activities involving hazardous and regulated materials, equipment and environments. The Incumbent will assist in the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and best management practices and complete required inspections and recordkeeping for research compliance. In addition, the incumbent provides administrative support and technical expertise to the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Institutional Review Board (IRB), and may serve as Radiation Safety Officer.

Responsibilities:
Conducts and/or coordinates weekly or periodic site inspections, such as safety showers and eyewash stations, chemical fume hoods and biosafety cabinets, autoclaves, and deionized water systems.Assists and participates in emergency planning drills, such as spill team drills, first aid training and evacuation or serve weather drills. Assists in the development and maintenance of a laboratory audit program including the performance of annual inspections of IBC BSL1 and BSL2 labs.Assists with the incident/accident investigations and ensure conformity with laws and regulations. May serve as the institutions Radiation Safety Officer (RSO); responsible for implementing the radiation protection program as prescribed by NRC NUREG 1557, volume 7 and the Joint Commission Ambulatory Program standard Provision of Care, Treatment and Services.Provide support to the IBC, including: protocol review, risk assessment; attend IBC meetings and draft meeting minutes. Conducts training sessions for researchers and staff as required under Federal and State regulations or University policies). Develops informational and educational safety training for in person presentations or annual net learning modules.Work with other departments and participates in meetings, conferences, and WMed committees and discussions to ensure compliance in all areas of EHS.Assists with providing input to external reporting to regulatory agencies. This includes annual reports, permits and licenses.Administers and oversees the storage, transport and disposal of all hazardous and or required substances at all WMed facilities. Assists in the development of written materials, policies and procedures to support the WMed EHS program.Assist with hazard communication system and Safety Data Sheets (SDS)Responds to emergencies with hazardous materials, which may include biological, chemical or radioactive substances to aid in remediation efforts on-site as needed. Travel to other WMed sites in performance of job duties and responsibilities.Keeps abreast of regulatory issues and technologies, which may impact facility, including but not limited to Center for Disease Control (CDC), Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA), Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Michigan Occupational Health and Safety Administration (MIOSHA), adapts new technology as appropriate to meet changing EHS regulatory requirements and improve efficiency.Ability to promptly respond in person to all WMed locations outside of normal business hours as needed. Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Chemistry, or related discipline, and three or more years of experience in environmental health and safety discipline or related field, Masters degree preferred.Qualified to serve as Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) under Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Materials License and Joint Commission requirements.Experience with environment, laboratory, clinic, pharmaceutical, health-care or animal research setting highly preferred.Knowledge of US Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) regulations, such as Michigan Occupational Health and Safety Administration (MIOSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and other applicable regulations.Knowledge of hazardous waste regulations to include hazardous chemical/biohazard storage and disposal regulations.Knowledge of occupational safety principles, including use of personal protective equipment, ergonomics, administrative controls and engineering controls.Detail oriented and proficient with computer applications such as Microsoft Office products.Ability to respond promptly to all campus locations requiring environmental health and safety services, which may occur outside of normal business hours. LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, CERTIFICATIONS: Professional certification in EHS specialty is strongly recommended (e.g. Certified Safety Professional (CSP)) within three years of employment.OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of current regulations, guidelines and prudent practices applying to health and safety issues. Experience in design and performance of laboratory safety surveys to identify chemical, radiation, biological and general hazards and use the results of these audits to coordinate and correct identified deficiencies. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the identification and evaluation of health and safety hazards. Ability to evaluate occupational health problems and devise solutions. Knowledge of risk assessment, hazard identification and control, chemical toxicology and properties and the principals of chemical use and storage. Knowledge of radioisotope handling techniques, including principles of external radiation dosimetry and biological uptake.Effective interpersonal skill, including the ability to deal effectively and efficiently with people in the widest variety of job classifications and multiple departments. Ability to develop and present safety training to a wide variety of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community. Solid organizational skills to plan, organize, and prioritize multiple projects. Able to organize and schedule tasks to complete projects effectively and efficiently. Demonstrated ability to use word processing, spreadsheet and database software to analyze data and prepare reports and training materials. Demonstrated ability to work efficiently and effectively in a team structure and with other professionals.
