This position consists of a team of biologists working collaboratively and on an individual level to conduct federal protocol-level nighttime broadcast surveys for Northern Spotted Owls on private lands along the coastal range of northern California. These surveys are completed for compliance with the California Forest Practice Rules Act for the purposes of a variety of projects, including Timber Harvest Plans for private industrial landowners. The biologist will work closely with the team of biologists to understand project specific guidelines and individual client needs.

Surveys are conducted almost entirely during nighttime hours, though some daytime visits are required.  Individuals should be comfortable working alone during nighttime conditions in forested areas and be comfortable navigating mountainous logging roads and trails. This position also requires that the individual be able to physically traverse steep and rugged terrain, often in off-trail conditions, as well as operating 4x4 trucks and ATVs.

The biologist will be expected to follow a strict protocol, collect and transcribe data, be comfortable working at night and handling mice, and be able to navigate using map and compass. Surveyors will be expected identify, map, and locate NSOs and other owl and raptor species within the area. The Biologist should become intimately familiar with the 2011 NSO Survey Protocol – 2012 Revision. Biologists should be comfortable orienteering, interpreting maps, using GPS units, and in good physical condition to hike steep terrain. Individuals should also have good vision and hearing skills for species identification during nighttime and daytime surveys as well as a willingness to learn other owl species calls.
