OBJECTIVES/PURPOSE

Takeda is making significant investments in microbiome drug development for gastrointestinal diseases across therapeutic modalities. We are building a dedicated group of microbiome experts as part of GI Drug Discovery Unit (GI DDU) to advance this growing pipeline. In addition, we are developing multi-year collaborations focused on the next generation of microbiome therapeutics. The selected candidate will expand internal microbiology research capabilities to support our growing microbiome portfolio. This is an opportunity to step into a leadership role and build vital capabilities to accelerate preclinical and translational research objectives.

The GI DDU has a growing interdisciplinary group of individuals focused on gastrointestinal diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease, liver disease, and enteric nervous system/neurodegenerative diseases. We are looking for a dynamic and driven individual join as an expert in microbiology/microbiome-based therapeutics. The Research Scientist will have wide visibility within the organization and among our academic and biotech partners.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Establish internal microbiology research capabilities by planning and equipping a laboratory environment capable of aerobic and anaerobic microbiological research
  • Develop and maintain SOPs for key laboratory workflows and train colleagues as needed
  • Expectation to design, conduct, analyze, and present results from experiments within cross-functional project teams aligned with scientific and operational objectives
  • Perform experiments to isolate, bank, functionally characterize, and manipulate aerobic and anaerobic bacteria from a variety sample types/sources
  • Build relationships and collaborate with internal and external cross-functional scientific leaders and proactively identify new areas for collaboration within the GI DDU and across therapeutic areas
  • Document experimental data in electronic laboratory notebooks and other databases in a timely and accurate manner, and in accordance with the company quality systems and regulatory filing obligations
  • Keep current with emerging trends in microbiology/microbiome fields including genomics and synthetic biology

EDUCATION, BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:

  • PhD degree in a scientific discipline with 2+ years experience, or
  • MS with 8+ years experience, or
  • BS with 10+ years experience
  • Deep knowledge and experience in microbial cultivation (including anaerobic techniques), isolation, and characterization is required
  • Significant experience with current molecular biology, genetic, biochemical, NGS, and synthetic biology techniques
  • Must be able demonstrate successful assay development and validation experience
  • Strong publication track record in top peer-reviewed scientific journals is preferred
  • Experience with implementing and operating laboratory automation, and working with information and/or sample management systems preferred
  • Excellent problem solving, communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
  • Independent, self-starting and supportive of team-based research and experience working effectively in a matrix organization
