Job Description:

Pennington Biomedical Research Center, a world-renowned academic research institute of Louisiana State University, is seeking an Assistant Director in Comparative Biology.

About Pennington Biomedical Research Center

At the forefront of medical discovery as it relates to understanding the causes of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and dementia, Pennington Biomedical is a campus of Louisiana State University and conducts basic, clinical and population research.

Pennington Biomedical Research Center is a world-renowned academic research institute that is exceptionally well equipped for studying the fundamental mechanisms driving changes in metabolic health. The Center includes three Scientific Divisions: Basic Science, Clinical Research, and Population and Public Health, enabling both focused research and translational science. Research at Pennington is supported broadly by multiple NIH Research Centers, including NORC, COBRE, and LACaTS centers.

The research enterprise at the center includes approximately 65 faculty and more than 20 post-doctoral fellows who comprise a network of 44 laboratories supported by lab technicians, nurses, dietitians and support personnel, and 13 highly specialized core service facilities. Pennington Biomedical is located within state-of-the-art research facilities on a 222-acre campus in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Assistant Director of Comparative Biology

The Comparative Biology Core (CBC) is committed to the humane, ethical, and responsible use of animals in research and provides the highest quality animal care to all laboratory animals while serving and promoting Pennington Biomedical's research mission for the benefit of human and animal health. The assistant director will support and assist the director in oversight of the animal care program, policy, planning, and administration and have direct supervisory responsibilities for components of facility operations.

* Coordination and maintenance of daily operations within CBC.

* Coordinate all aspects of animal housing facilities/equipment, manage facilities/equipment, allocate space.

* Assist with oversight of facility operational charges and anticipate annual budgetary needs for budget proposals.

* Communicate with PBRC researchers, facilities management personnel, and administrative personnel. This includes disseminating information, providing guidance through presentations, and leading team meetings to review progress and performance and ensure follow-up on previous decisions.

* Maintain good relations with outside sales representatives. This includes reviewing, modifying, and approving preventive maintenance contracts for equipment; maintaining service commitments; purchase agreements & purchase orders; execution of capital equipment & supply inventories; negotiation of bid contents; and assuring the quality of purchased materials.

* Writing, initiating, updating, and implementation of standard operating procedures.

* Perform duties of subordinates as needed to assist in times of center closures and personnel absences.

* Implementation of principles which prevent cross contamination during management of facility operations, disease outbreaks, and when working across facility areas with different biosecurity needs (e.g. surgery suite, quarantine, BSL2, barrier housing).

* Follow directives of the veterinarian in charge and ensure the health and welfare of housed species. Ensure daily animal care and facility operations in absence of Attending Veterinarian.

Required Qualifications

* Bachelors of Science in Biological Science, Animal Science, and/or Business Administration Management

* Certification as American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Laboratory Animal Technologist

* Knowledge of regulations governing use of animals in testing, research, and training including husbandry, research techniques, management principles

* Interpersonal skills to direct work of subordinates and ability to multi-task under pressure/deadlines

* Excellent written & verbal communication

* Knowledge of Microsoft Office

Preferred Qualifications

* Graduate of an AVMA accredited School for Veterinary Technology and licensed (or eligible) in the State of Louisiana (RVT)

* AALAS Certified Manager of Animal Resource (CMAR)

* Certified Public Manager for the state of Louisiana

Special Qualifications

Pennington requires the COVID-19 vaccine for all students, faculty, and staff or, for those with an approved exemption, the employee must participate in mandatory biweekly testing. New employees must either submit proof of vaccination or apply for and be granted an exemption prior to their official start date.
