Job Description
  • Responsible for development, implementation, education, and training on new methods as required by industry or identified by technical committee. This includes review of meLIMS test codes, and creation of appropriate training documentation.
  • Responsible for managing and auditing training program of all associates including both analytical technique and technical competency.
  • Performs timely and accurate analyses of samples to meet customer commitments. This includes, but is not limited to, sample preparation for analysis, sample analyses, data review and reduction, and providing data interpretation and opinions.
  • Creates, reviews, issues, and audits certificates of analyses that are aligned with expected quality parameters and methodology for both internal and intercompany analyses.
  • Uses appropriate quality measures, which meet or exceed the standards, set by ISO/IEC 17025, government regulations, GLP,and company requirements, when performing assigned tasks.
  • Supports onboarding of new clients through consulting (as needed) and technical review of new and existing quotes.
  • Sets up, performs, and reviews data/reports associated with challenge or stability studies.
  • Assists in managing daily operations of the microbiology department including scheduling, supervising, instructing, monitoring, and assisting in the performance of manual and instrumental analyses as needed.
  • Demonstrates and promotes the company image through the exercise of sound and ethical business practices as related to the public and our customers and actively participating in local and technical committees and webinars.
  • Review, present, and drive new or beneficial technologies, platforms, and methods to business unit manager from those identified by CSO or industry ensuring the laboratory can support current and future needs of clients.
  • Understands and follows Quality system documents relevant to responsibilities e.g. Quality Manual, Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs), Test Methods, AOAC/AFNOR/IISO/BAM reference methods and validation files.
  • Performs microbiological testing on client samples using appropriate instruments and techniques.
  • Troubleshoots equipment/instruments utilized and performs minor repairs. Coordinates major instrument repairs with repair person(s).
  • Establishes and implements procedures to ensure that assigned equipment is properly cleaned, calibrated/standardized, and adequate for the testing performed and is maintained in good working order. This includes maintaining equipment operating instructions, manuals, and required logbooks. Ensures all regulatory procedures pertaining to sample testing are followed correctly, if they are in normal course of work.
  • Maintains a neat and accurate record system; keeps accurate records of work performed on a daily basis and as needed for quality control results.
  • Assists laboratory staff in making sure that analytical work done under ISO meets requirements.
  • Reviews and evaluates test data generated within assigned area of responsibility for technical accuracy, as well as SOP and test method compliance. Performs and provides basic evaluation of statistical tests to determine the quality accuracy of data and report values.
  • Investigates to determine the cause of non-conformances that are identified, determines and implements corrective action; and follows-up to ensure that the corrective action resolved the problem.
  • Creates and reviews reports.
  • Reviews applications, conducts interviews, and makes hiring decisions for the position reporting to this position.
  • Trains and documents the training of assigned technical staff on test methods, formal SOPs, regulations, ISO requirements, and laboratory policies/procedures applicable to area of responsibility.
  • Reviews annually the performance of personnel that report directly to this position and provides written reviews to the Business Unit Manager for approval.
  • Remains current on technical, industry, and business advancements and trends as suggested by the Chief Scientific Officer, technical committee, or business unit manager.
  • Maintains a perpetual state of readiness and willingness to respond to the queries and needs of clients, staff, and coworkers; assures that clients are kept informed and their needs are met.
  • Performs bacterial/mold culture identifications or investigational studies as requested.
  • Performs organoleptic evaluations of seafood as requested.
  • Performs serological identification and/or review as needed.
  • Performs and compiles analytical testing and reporting associated with FDA-detention samples as needed.
  • Adheres to all pertinent company health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Maintain the breadth and depth of current and past food microbiology knowledge associated with an "expert" level.
  • Assists with product and supplies receiving.
  • Assists with office duties, including review and processing of invoices and billing associated with materials used day-to-day or special projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or other related degree concentration, or equivalent directly-related experience (two years of directly related industry experience is equivalent to one full-time year of college in related major) and 10+ years of industry experience.
  • Master's degree or PhD preferred.
  • Strong understanding of food microbiology, food science, and biochemical/molecular characteristics of relevant microorganisms.
  • Experience using and/or evaluating rapid detection platforms and methods including inclusivity/exclusivity studies.
  • Past experience in teaching/training team in proper microbiological and associated molecular analytical techniques.
  • Foundational knowledge of CCPs, HAACP, GMP, GLP, FQS, FSMA etc. for consultative services as needed.
  • Past experience with BAX, VIDAS, and other molecular detection platforms
  • Past knowledge and understanding of culture methods for Salmonella, C.perfringens, E.coli, S.aureus, B.cereus, etc
  • Authorization to work in the United States indefinitely without restriction or sponsorship
