Group/Division: Group/Division: Specialty Diagnostics Group (SDG) / Rapid Diagnostic Solutions (RDS)
Position Location: San Diego, CA
Number of Direct Reports:
This role supports the new Rapid Diagnostics Solutions (RDS) business unit in San Diego, California, part of the group of diagnostics businesses at Thermo Fisher Scientific. We are focused on increasing access to affordable innovations in diagnostic testing and enabling data-driven decisions. What we do matters because our work has a direct impact on people's lives, and we take that responsibility seriously.
How will you make an impact?
The Scientist II will work to develop rapid, point-of-care molecular diagnostic assay products. This position is responsible for assisting the development and validation of assay formulations, integrating the assays with proprietary instrumentation, and assisting in design transfer to manufacturing in an ISO 13485 environment. Demonstrated biochemistry and molecular biology expertise and experience with PCR, multiplexed and Real Time-PCR technology. Experience working with infectious agents in a BSL-2 environment is desired.
Daily activities include: the initial assay development to meet product requirements, feasibility experimentation, composition of SOP documents and product transfer into manufacturing, verification and validation testing, and on-going support of transferred products.

What will you do?
- Design, perform, and interpret experiments with guidance or as part of a group
- Hands-on PCR assay development, and optimization as needed
- Maintain accurate and detailed lab notebooks and appropriate documentation
- Support verification and validation studies
- Prepare regular reports documenting procedures and experimental results
- Present research data and conclusions to peers and management
- Ability to read and understand scientific papers and patent
How will you get there?
Education
- BS in Biology, Molecular Biology or other scientific discipline
- 3+ years of experience working in regulated industry
Experience and Skills
- Ability to work independently
- Work within an integrated multidisciplinary laboratory and be able to work with other scientists, technicians, engineers, and students on the team
- Interact and work effectively in a demanding, fast-paced biotech startup environment
- Understand technical concepts of Molecular biology
- Confidence and organized in ability to present findings to management and team
- Strong writing skills, able to maintain thorough and eligible laboratory notebook
- Be able to work with internal and external team members
- Efficient laboratory skills
- Problem-solve in a timely and successful manner
- Ability to lift 25lbs.
