Job Description

This position performs routine and specialized laboratory tests and related procedures. Performs technical work and problem solving at a high Level of complexity. May direct and coordinates a small group of technologists, (usually 10 or fewer) and will in the absence of the Laboratory Supervisor, carry out supervisor functions..

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Performs tests and procedures requiring special skills, knowledge and judgement; also performs the functions of lower classified personnel as needed. Fully competent is all aspects of Clinical Bacteriology. Trains in at least 2 of the specialist areas of Parasitology, Mycology, Virology and Mycobacteriology.
  • Records and reviews test results for significance to determine if additional testing or an alternative procedure is required, and does what is needed.
  • Reviews antibiotic susceptibility for appropriate patterns.
    • Requests additional testing as required to r/o resistant organisms and unusual susceptibility phenotypes, e.g., MRSA, VRE, ESBL, CRE, MDRO, per current year NHSN guidelines. Ensures adherence to Antibiotic Reporting and Rationale Procedure, relating antibiotic reporting guidelines by Body Site and ensures Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines are adhered to for antibiotic reporting especially with unusual requests, or infrequently tested antibiotic. Ensures Day of Use QC is correct for all antibiotic reporting. In consultation with Epidemiology, application of resistant organism tags are used to identify isolates followed by Epidemiology for statistical purposes or to ensure isolation of those patients. Daily electronic Culture Review ensures notification of floors if resistant organisms are found.
    • Selection of the most appropriate antimicrobial agents and the method for testing is based on the identity of the organism, the body site from which it was isolated, proven effectiveness of the antimicrobials, prevalence of resistance, cost, most recent CLSI M100 guidelines, and the Tufts Hospital pharmacy formulary. Frequent consultation with the ID Pharmacist and with Infectious Disease physicians are made for individual patient and reporting issues.
  • Performs trouble shooting of instruments, takes and records corrective action including calling biomedical engineering and or company technical service. Works with technical service if trouble shooting can be resolved on site without field service engineer. On an assigned basis, may direct and co-ordinate the activities on an assigned group or shift to ensure all work is performed according to established guidelines and that all standards for quality service and safety are met.
  • Participates in evaluation of new procedures analytical systems, modification of existing procedures, update of procedure manuals, evaluation of new products and other investigative projects.
  • Participates in the performance evaluation of subordinate personnel as required.
  • Assists less experienced personnel with technical guidance and ad help in solving problems with culture workup or with testing instrumentation.
  • Assists in orienting and training new employees, students and residents. Performs administrative functions such as ordering and inventory control as assigned.
  • Relays Test results and/ or report to physicians and others authorized to receive them. Discusses finding with physicians and other clinical staff.
  • Attends mandatory annual training sessions in standard precautions, fire safety, chemical hygiene and laboratory compliance.
  • Performs all functions that are required for the laboratory to meet the standards specified by accrediting agencies such as the Joint Commission, and the College of American Pathologists (CAP) with respect to : written technical and administrative procedures and polies covering test methodologies, operations and maintenance of instruments and equipment, quality control of testing and reporting, specimen collection and handling, plant maintenance, personnel, policies, safety and Quality Assurance.

Qualifications

JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
  • Must have the ability to operate sophisticated and technical equipment and perform tests with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Analytical abilities necessary to organize and oversee the work of others, review findings and recommend sound policies and procedures required.
  • Communication skills needed to work effectively with subordinates, peers physicians, nurses, medical students and fellows.
  • Must have interpersonal skills necessary to interact with peers. Interpersonal skills necessary to provide effective leadership.
  • Ability to work accurately and effectively and efficiently under pressure. in a fast paced environment. Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines.

EDUCATION:
  • Level of knowledge generally obtained through a Bachelors' Degree in Medical Technology or Specialist area from an accredited college or university.
  • ASCP, NCA or similar certification required.

EXPERIENCE:
  • Requires 2 years of satisfactory work experience in an accredited clinical laboratory, including 1 year in a laboratory with range and volume of testing and types of instrumentation similar to this institution.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above, may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.

LICENSES, ETC. :
  • ASCP registration required

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Works in a laboratory setting.
  • Regular exposure to bodily fluids, infectious materials, toxic and hazardous substances and unpleasant odors.
  • Work may cause visual fatigue due to close examination of large numbers of specimens.
  • Subject to stress from working under time pressure to meet production schedules.
