Role Purpose

This role leads the Hoffman Estates-based Central Quality Control (CQC) Microbiology Lab. In addition, this role is a subject matter expert for microbiology the company, providing support to Customer Advocacy, Sales, and Operations. This role works with the Quality group to position microbiology at Tate & Lyle to be world class. This role will have day-to-day interactions with the lab technicians and Technical Lead/Supervisor that they manage. In addition, this role will interact with Customer Advocacy, Sales, and Operations and will have some interaction directly with customers.

Employee/Labor Health & Safety work encompasses activities related to the wellbeing of employees including: •Developing and implementing policies and practices to identify/mitigate hazardous conditions within the workplace •Identifying potential workplace hazards, unsafe equipment, work practices, and working conditions •Investigating accidents and liaising with engineers, management, and health and safety regulatory authorities to identify causes of accidents and prevent their recurrence •Providing advice and training on safety protocols and conducting audits to ensure compliance with organization and government standards related to employee heath and safety •Maintaining and analyzing records of workplace injuries, illness, and absences to identify areas of concern and provide information required by regulatory agencies

Requirements

The scope of this job includes, but is not limited to:
  • Maintaining the ISO 17025 Quality System and all the documents contained within the scope of the accreditation, per the requirements of the Quality Manager role in the 17025 quality system
  • Comply and ensure team compliance with all EHSQ (environmental, health, safety and quality) policies, procedures and regulations for the site
  • Ensuring that the Quality Management System is established, implemented and maintained in accordance with the ISO 9001 and ISO 17025 standards
  • Managing the internal audit program
  • Coordinating laboratory accreditation activities
  • Maintenance and distribution of the Quality Manual and associated documents
  • Maintaining a master list of current versions of quality documentation
  • Training personnel on Quality Management System activities
  • Monitoring the Quality Management System
  • Reporting on the performance of the Quality Management System to senior management for review and as a basis for improvement of the Quality Management System
  • Approving test methods
  • Supervising the proficiency testing program
  • Hiring new personnel
  • Oversee the identification, documentation, and correction of nonconformities and potential nonconformities on the Corrective Action Tracking Worksheet
  • Maintaining current job descriptions for Quality/Technical Manager and Technicians
  • Overseeing quality, standard pricing, customized quotations, and invoicing for tests performed
  • Prioritizing workload as the designee for the Technical Manager role of the 17025 quality system, ensure all tasking required of the Technical Manager is completed.


In addition, this position supports the global microbiology needs for Tate & Lyle, this includes, but is not limited to:
  • Oversee global Environmental Monitoring program - annual reviews, follow-up on elevated results, audit support
  • Coordinate Shelf Life program - on-going shelflife extension studies, design and refinement of the manufacturing site managed shelflife verification studies and special projects
  • Support and develop other microbiologists/microbiology technicians within Tate and Lyle
  • Provide microbiology technical support to Customer Advocacy group, assisting with customer questions and specification reviews - on-site and/or remote (via e-mail and phone) microbiological support and troubleshooting at our US and international locations, as necessary
  • Continuous evaluation of new qualified micro testing methodologies, i.e. rapid qualification and auditing of external micro testing laboratories
