Safety Officer

Basic Function
Performs work in safety, chemical hygiene, hazardous waste, and biosafety areas. Assists the Chemical Hygiene Officer and Biosafety Officer by performing tasks in support of their respective programs. Assist in project review, safety training, facility inspections, and advising staff on ESH matters. Responsible for ensuring compliance with applicable regulations including but not limited to OSHA, EPA, DOT, DHS, CDC, USDA, NIH, and DOD.

Nature and Scope
The position of Safety Officer is within the ESH Office of the Quality & Regulatory Systems department, and reports to the Manager, ESH. The Safety Officer performs safety inspections and other safety functions that cover the areas of fire prevention, laboratory safety, biosafety, personal protective equipment, laboratory engineering controls, and safety equipment to ensure compliance with Local, State and Federal regulations as well as MRIGlobal's internal ESH policies and procedures.

This position is a member of the MRIGlobal Chemical Spill Response Team (RCRA Contingency Emergency Responder), Biological Spill Response Team, and a member of the Chemical Surety CAIRA Emergency Response Team.

Principal Accountabilities
  • Assists with the development and implementation of the environment, safety and health (ESH) programs and serves as a resource for all ESH issues
  • Conducts risk assessments and job hazard analysis
  • Assists with the day to day operations of the ESH program. Keeps Manager, ESH informed of any apparent incidents or deficiencies relating to the program
  • Ensures that project ESH requirements specified by clients are achieved
  • Assists in the development of Safety Plans compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and guidelines. This may include, but not limited to, an emergency response plan and a natural disaster plan
  • Provides training to technical staff, visitors, and contractors
  • Provides ESH technical assistance to employees and project management
  • Performs inspections to assess compliance with ESH program requirements and provides follow up checks to ensure violations are corrected. Inspects safety equipment and facilities as designated
  • Serves as a member of the hazardous materials spill response, biological spill response, and CAIRA teams
  • Plans, develops and completes tasks assigned by the Manager, ESH and therefore must be willing/flexible to perform a variety of tasks with short notice
  • Communicates status of job duties and problems encountered with supervisor and staff
  • People accountabilities specific to this position:
o. Able to perform duties relating to spill clean-up including but not limited to ability to lift and carry 50 pounds, pass medical clearance to wear designated respiratory protection, and sit/stand for long periods of time

Success Factors
  • Possess interpersonal skills to work in a team-based environment
  • Interpersonal, written and oral communication skills with the ability to work with office staff, researchers, facilities design and maintenance personnel, laboratory technical staff, outside contractors, and government agencies
  • Working knowledge of OSHA and consensus standards; DOT regulations; EPA RCRA regulations, TSCA regulations; Missouri Department of Natural Resources waste regulations and reporting, Kansas City Water Pollution regulations
  • Working knowledge CDC and USDA regulations as they relate to biosafety containment, disease epidemiology, and biosafety techniques
  • Must have ability to obtain U.S. Government security clearances
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree (B.S/B.A.) from four year college or university in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health or related science field; or equivalent combination of education and experience with a minimum of 2 years' experience in R&D safety in the laboratory environment.

Applicants selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. In order to meet the government security investigation requirements, U.S. citizenship is a prerequisite.
