This position is responsible for the development, implementation and maintenance of the site Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) programs including, but not limited to, hazard identification, evaluation and control, accident/injury prevention, hazardous materials/waste management, emergency preparedness, fire/life safety, ergonomics, industrial hygiene and environmental regulatory compliance. This position will ensure the company's compliance with regulatory requirements and compliance programs with agencies (such as EPA, IEPA, IEMA, OSHA, DOT, FDA) relative to the pharmaceutical industry. This position will author and filing of local, regional, state and federal reports that are required while serving as the primary contact and liaison with regulatory agencies as it pertains to EHS. This function ultimately serves to provide methodology and hands-on leadership in the development of a strong and integrated safety culture with fundamental motivations to improve the quality of people's lives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
- Develop and implement site specific environmental, health and safety programs designed to meet federal, state, and local requirements resulting in a fully integrated safety culture.
- Develop and maintain compliance programs (policies, procedures, etc.).
- Acts as a resource to staff and internal customers as the EHS subject matter expert.
- Performs needs assessments and root cause investigations.
- Manage EHS related budget and contract services.
- Maintain, review and exercise oversight of the MSDS and HAZCOM system. This includes the maintenance of all material safety data sheets for incoming raw materials and finished goods.
- Audit for compliance with regulatory requirements. Take proactive measures to remediate all adverse EHS conditions.
- Organize emergency evacuation drills and audit the plan for improvement opportunities including management of emergency egress way finding and periodic reviews with local Fire and EMS agencies.
- Conduct new hire training and coordinate the timely training of employees to meet EPA, IEPA, OSHA and DOT requirements. Maintain all records and documents necessary to support training activities.
- Review and recommend the proper personal protection equipment as needed for each department and job function.
- Provide expert on-site leadership concerning proper methods of hazardous waste disposal. Maintain the records of inspections, correspondence and consultations on projects related to environmental compliance.
- Organize and maintain EHS related records. Manage completion of necessary forms and paperwork on an on-going basis consistent with, but not limited to, the reports outlined below:
- RD115 Compliance Report to MWRDGC (Quarterly),
- RD925 User Charges Annual Report to MWRDGC,
- IL EPA Annual Hazardous Waste Report,
- IL EPA Tier II Report,
- IL EPA Air Emission Report,
- IEMA Chemical Safety Compliance,
- US DOT Hazardous Material Registration (annual),
- IL EPA Hazardous Material Disposal (quarterly),
- OSHA 300 Logs and Summaries,
- Weekly Samples for MWRDGC when requested quarterly to monitor discharge water.
- Provide support for new R&D projects (as necessary) to comply with applicable FDA, EPA, IEPA and OSHA requirements.
- Review new equipment and raw material reports to assess and evaluate associated risks and hazards and communicate as necessary.
- Periodically review air quality testing and monitoring and develop recommendations as necessary.
- Develop and supervise Contractor Safety Management Program including contractor prequalification, job hazard analysis, project safety audits and post project reviews.
- Develop and maintain meaningful site safety metrics and reporting to management.
- Conduct periodic site safety meetings with all departments.
Communications:
- Internal Communication: Works with Pharmaceutical R&D, Process Development, Engineering, Facilities, Quality Assurance, Quality Control, and Purchasing to ensure compliance with all safety related regulatory requirements.
- External Communication: Regularly communicates with regulatory agencies as required.
Qualifications:
- Minimum Education & Experience Requirements: Bachelor degree in science or health-related field with five (5) years' experience primarily in Environmental Health and Safety function for the pharmaceutical or biotech manufacturing industry.
- Knowledge of occupational health, safety and environmental issues is required.
- The individual should have experience in developing a comprehensive safety program promoting a functional safety culture.
- The individual must be able to communicate efficiently and effectively in both oral and written presentations.
- The candidate must be competent with Microsoft Word and sufficiently skilled with computers to easily navigate through the Microsoft Windows platform, Microsoft Outlook and Excel.
- The successful candidate will be expected to work on complex problems in which analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of various factors.
- He/she will be expected to exercise judgment within broadly defined practices and policies in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. The individual may determine methods and procedures on new assignments and may provide guidance to contractors, vendors and all levels of the organization.

- While performing the duties of the job the employee is frequently required to sit. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms as well as being able to lift up to 50 pounds.
