The County of Yolo is recruiting to fill one regular, full-time position in the class of Animal Services Officer I at the Yolo County Sheriff's Office. Interested applicants must submit an online County of Yolo Employment Application and a completed supplemental questionnaire by the closing date.

Definition

Under supervision, an Animal Services Officer I receives and cares for dogs, cats and other varieties of animals in the Animal Shelter, and is trained to enforce state laws and county and city ordinances pertaining to licensing, impounding, and disposal of animals; and to perform related work as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The Animal Services Officer I is an entry and training class. Incumbents receive and care for animals in the Animal Shelter and may be responsible for maintaining the shelter facility in a clean and orderly condition. Incumbents are also trained to enforce state laws and county and city ordinances pertaining to the regulation of animals, the control of rabies, and the licensing of animals and kennels. Yolo County provides animal control services by contract to the four incorporated cities and the University of California at Davis as well as the unincorporated areas.

* Learns to patrol county and city streets and roads to locate, capture, and impound stray, vicious, injured and diseased animals, both large and small, including livestock and wildlife;
* Immunizes adoption animals for protection against disease as directed by medical staff;
* Learns rabies quarantine procedures of animals which have bitten humans or other animals;
* Issues citations for violations of laws, ordinances, and regulations;
* Investigates animal cruelty complaints;
* Learns court procedures for purposes of testimony;
* Assists in office operations;
* Maintains and prepares records and reports in Tiburon and Chameleon records systems;
* Maintains the Animal Shelter vehicles, facility and related grounds in a clean and orderly condition;
* Learns to properly clean animal pens and cages with chemicals and pressure washer;
* Learns to feed and care for a large assortment of animals in the Shelter as prescribed by medical staff;
* Learns to euthanize and dispose of animals in a prescribed manner;
* Will be required to operate a rifle, shotgun and chemical capture weapon and tazer when assisting to capture or destroy animals;
* Assumes standby duties after hours as assigned.

Employment Standards

Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade AND

Experience: Six months of full-time paid or volunteer experience in the care of impounding of animals OR Six months of full-time paid or volunteer experience in the interpretation and enforcement of laws or codes to the public.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

* Employees must successfully complete a 25 week Shelter and Field Training Program, which includes weekly progress evaluations.
* Possession of a valid Penal Code 832 Certificate (Arrest and Firearms). Applicants who do not possess the Certificate may be appointed to the position. However, the required Certificate must be obtained within the first six months from the date of employment.
* Persons employed in this class must be willing to work variable shifts and on standby involving nights, holidays and weekends.
* Persons employed in this class must be immunized against rabies and maintain immunity as long as risk of exposure continues. Must pass a Department Background Investigation and Livescan.

License:Positions in this classification require incumbents to possess and maintain a valid California driver's license, Class C or higher, to carry out job related duties. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical or mental disability may request a reasonable accommodation.

Possession of a driving record without moving violations for a period of at least two (2) years prior to time of appointment to the class.

Knowledge of: animal breeds, identity and behavior patterns of animals, including companion animals, livestock and wildlife; a working knowledge of basic computer skills.

Ability to:handle and care for large and small animals; ability to learn the laws, ordinances, and regulations pertaining to the control and licensing of animals; ability to perform a wide variety of general cleaning and maintenance work; ability to learn to impound and dispose of animals; ability to learn to analyze situations and to adopt an effective course of action; ability to use good judgment in emergency situations; ability to learn to investigate, evaluate, and resolve complaints in accordance with applicable laws; ability to maintain records both on paper and computerized versions; prepare and write clear, concise reports as required for successful job performance; ability to meet and deal effectively with the public in animal control work; ability to learn to safely operate firearms; ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions; ability to show compassion toward animals and owners and personnel performing euthanasia; ability to safely operate large vehicles and tow livestock trailers; ability to work in adverse weather conditions under emergency circumstances.
