Job Description

NOTE: This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research in the areas of computational systems biology. Your research will focus on the development of detailed system-level models of metabolism in microbial isolates and communities for examination of cross-cutting principles that regulate formation and maintenance of phototroph-microbial interactions and their system-level resource allocation consequences. This research will involve development of multiple types of models including genome-scale steady state models. The purpose of this appointment is to promote cutting-edge science and requires day-to-day interactions with experimental biologists. This position is in the Human Health Sciences Group in the Biosciences and Biotechnology Division.

In this role you will

* Conduct research in computational microbiology in the areas of microbial ecology and bioenergy research.
* Develop genome-scale models of metabolism in bacteria and algae
* Examine interactions between microbes and the surrounding medium using methods such as dynamic flux balance analysis (FBA).
* Analyze system-levels of biochemical/biophysical processes
* Contribute to the conception, design and execution of experiments and in silico analyses to address defined problems.
* Communicate with experimental biologists for systems biology studies.
* Work in a collaborative multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish goals.
* Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars and/or technical meetings.
* Perform other duties as assigned.


* PhD in microbiology, bioengineering, computer science, chemistry/biochemistry, physics or related field.
* Knowledge of the concepts of microbial physiology (particularly metabolism), systems biology and dynamics of multi-cellular communities.
* Experience in mathematical modeling of networks.
* Proficient verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information.
* Desire and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.

Qualifications we desire

* Experience using tools of linear programming and operations research.
* Experience in bioinformatics and computational analyses.
* Experience developing and using spatially multiscale dynamic reaction and transport models and familiarity with system-level modeling methods like FBA and tools like COBRA.
