The American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC) is the collective spirit and unifying voice of our nation's Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs). AIHEC provides leadership and influences public policy on American Indian and Alaska Native higher education issues through advocacy, research, and programmatic initiatives; promotes and strengthens Indigenous languages, cultures, communities, lands, and tribal nations; and through its unique position, serves member institutions and emerging TCUs.

Summary
This full- time, professional position will provide direct extension support to tribes and tribal colleges & universities located in California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona, the states comprising the service area of the Department of the Interior Southwest Climate Adaptation Science Center (SW CASC, https://www.swcasc.arizona.edu), located on the campus of the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ. The position will draw upon the SW CASC Tribal Engagement Strategy and work with the SW CASC to develop and implement a communication, education and outreach program involving tribal governments, schools and communities focused on supporting climate resilience planning and implementation. Tribal community-based activities to be supported by the climate science liaison include outreach/engagement, education and research associated with mobilizing community response to anticipated environmental, health, and safety impacts of climate change. This position reports to the Senior Associate for Strategic Initiatives and the SW CASC Deputy Director.
Essential Functions:
  • Conduct outreach to Tribal communities within the SW CASC service area to inform them of the climate science and adaptationresources available through the liaison and the SW CASC and its partners through meetings with Tribal governments,departments, NGOs, Tribal colleges and universities, and individuals involved in climate adaptation work
  • Facilitate relationship building, building on existing and cultivating new tribal partnerships
  • Provide climate adaptation planning support to Tribal governments and community climate resilience stakeholders in coordinationwith the SW CASC and other partners
  • Work with a steering committee comprising Tribal environmental professionals and other Tribal resilience stakeholders tounderstand and identify opportunities for climate adaptation research, funding or other needs or recommendations to provide amechanism for information and knowledge sharing, and to build trust that provides the foundation for enduring relationships.
  • Facilitate connections between Tribal communities and SW CASC and other federal agencies (e.g., Regional Integrated ScienceAssessment (RISA) programs, USDA Climate Hubs, and tribal extension programs, etc.) needed to supplement community climateadaptation planning, research and adaptive response efforts to further build and strengthen networks of tribal adaptationpractitioners.
  • Assist Tribal nations and community stakeholders in identifying local climate research needs and interpretation of locally relevantresearch findings, including helping SW CASCs initiatives and projects between tribes and partners
  • Provide technical support to Tribal nations and community stakeholders in design and implementation of climate research projects,in coordination with SW CASC research personnel
  • Establish and maintain ongoing contact with Tribal resource managers and other Tribal personnel involved in climate responseplanning and risk management
  • Participate in a network of Tribal climate science liaisons working within the CASC system
  • Provide mentoring and supervision to tribal student interns as needed
  • Coordinate with a workgroup organized by TCU/AIHEC to plan and implement research and education activities associated withTribal climate resilience
  • Use Web software to input, update, and maintain a project site for outreach and coordination of activities with SWCASC and Tribalcommunities
  • Work with data-oriented liaison to better enable access to western scientific, while identifying opportunities for finding synergieswith traditional practices and techniques.
  • Develop communication strategies in coordination with SWCASC and AIHEC outreach personnel
  • Draft correspondence, reports, and other documents as needed
  • Document activities and outcomes on quarterly basis for both supervisors.
  • Participate in AIHEC meetings, including weekly staff meetings, as required to integrate climate resilience into AIHEC and TCUstrategic planning and implementation activities

Required Education, Experience, and Attributes (minimum requirements):
  • Must hold a master's degree in a relevant field
  • Three plus years of experience in an area of science relevant to climate change and/or tribal issues, including the social sciences

and public health
  • Familiarity with recent climate change research and resources within applicant's area of expertise
  • Basic understanding of American Indian traditional ecological knowledge and sovereignty issues among Southwest American

Indian tribes highly desired
  • Ability to assist in development and evaluation of research plans, methods, and outcomes
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, especially the ability to articulate relevant climate change-related issues and

concepts to American Indian communities and non-scientists generally
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a collaborative team member
  • Knowledge of consensus building and group facilitation processes
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, document, and manage multiple projects.
  • Current relationships and network with tribal professionals highly desired.
