AncestryDNA is seeking a motivated and talented Senior Computational Biologist to join our Computational Genomics team. Our team is at the forefront of building computational and machine learning methods that connect people to the places and ancestors of their past through genomics. As a Computational Biologist, you will work with our enthusiastic world-class team of data scientists, population geneticists, and statisticians to mine large datasets to understand populations, their histories, and their DNA sharing patterns. You will use the discoveries you make to collaborate with the team to build the next algorithmic breakthroughs that will enrich our customer's lives.What You'll Do:You will build algorithms that solve complex problems to drive innovationYou will work collaboratively with our world-class team of data scientists, population geneticists, and statisticians.You will mine large datasets and run analysis to understand populations, their histories, and their DNA sharing patterns.
Who You Are: The successful candidate for the position will have a PhD or MS in computational biology, computer science, machine learning, population geography, bioinformatics, biostatistics, statistics, economics or a related field with an emphasis in computational science. Minimum 2+ years of experience working in computational research outside of PhD is required.Creative thinking to develop novel approaches to complex problems is required.Experience developing and applying computational and/or machine learning methods to interpret complex datasets in a research setting is required.Proficiency in programming to implement and validate new approaches is required, with proficiency in Python, C++, Java, and/or R.Ability to craft rigorous research approaches to uncover new insights into data is required.Experience or expertise with computational biology, population genetics, population geography, or demography is desired.Knowledge of sequence modeling algorithms (e.g., Markov models, probabilistic context-free grammars), sampling techniques, and expectation-maximization is a plus. Experience developing and applying machine learning methods to decipher complex datasets is a plus.Experience working with distributed computing tools (Hadoop, Hive, Spark, etc.) is desiredExcellent verbal and written communication skills are required.Strong organizational and interpersonal skills will be needed in our collaborative and fast-paced team.
