Job Description

This position processes clinical materials for Electron Microscopy studies. This includes preparing chemicals and staining and screening thick and thin tissue sections from human or animal sources. Cuts and prepares Immunoflorescence cases and covers for Immuhistochemistry as required or assigned. Performs full dark room duties for clinical, lectures, publications, processing, printing and enlarging electron micrographs. Assist faculty members with research work as applicable to Electron Microscopy. Monitors workflow and utilization of resources for the department and reports to the department supervisor. Performs technical functions requiring a high level of expertise. Performs administrative functions as assigned.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Following departmental guidelines receives and accessions samples from the OR, or outside sources. Identifies, processing and cuts samples for analysis.
  • Works closely with Pathologists to ensure adequate amount and usage of the supplied material and the processing of such material.
  • Assists Pathologists and Residents with preparation of the submitted material.
  • Participates in teaching of residents and postdoctoral students.
  • As assigned/needed, manages personnel to ensure that the work is performed according to established procedures and that standards of quality, service and safety are met.
  • As assigned, prioritizes and allocates work to ensure its timely completion and to achieve optimal utilization of resources.
  • Assumes necessary responsibilities of the supervisor in his/her absence.
  • Participates in and may monitor the orientation and training of new employees, students, and residents, as needed.
  • May assist supervisor in assuring proper follow up when technical, logistic and communication problems are encountered.

  • May supervise personnel, including participation in the hiring, orientation, training and review processes.
  • Works with Pathologists to determine accession sample processing.
  • Performs other similar job related duties as required or directed.

Qualifications

JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
  • Analytical abilities necessary to organize and oversee the work of others, review findings and recommend sound policies and procedures required.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to provide effective leadership.
  • Communication skills needed to work effectively with subordinates, peers physicians, nurses, medical students and fellows.
  • Ability to work accurately and effectively in a fast paced environment. Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines.

EDUCATION:
  • Level of knowledge generally obtained through a Bachelors degree in Medical Technology or a related field or equivalent.

EXPERIENCE:
  • Three years satisfactory work experience in an accredited clinical laboratory, including 1 year in a laboratory with range and volume of testing, and types of instrumentation similar to the instrumentation used at New England Medical Center.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above, may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.

LICENSES, ETC. :
  • ASCP registration required

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Works in a laboratory setting.
  • Regular exposure to bodily fluids, infectious materials, toxic and hazardous substances and unpleasant odors.
  • Work may cause visual fatigue due to close examination of large numbers of specimens.
  • Subject to stress from working under time pressure to meet production schedules.
