**Overview of the position**

This position is a new Global role with the oversight of the whole strategy and management of the preclinical Immunology conducted in vivo in animal models and in some in vitro models for further de-risking projects as appropriate. The incumbent will be the Global Head of Immunology Research covering two locations and of constituting the foundation of the early-stage segment of the Global Immunology function. The incumbent will supervise a diverse set of activities, such as a better understanding of the host pathogen interactions (leveraging a panel of bacteriologists, virologists and immunologists), the development of relevant animal models to assess the immune responses and the protective efficacy of the vaccine candidates, and the design and deployment of the most relevant read outs to down select the best candidates as projects evolves along the value chain. The incumbent will be managing a group of 50ish scientists and technicians with a diverse set of skills taking into account site and cultural diversities, but bolstering a unique sense of purpose, and transforming the acceleration culture.

In the context of sanofi pasteur strategies and policies, the incumbent contributes to the on-going R&D and Global Immunology transformations to best support the future growth and profitability of the company by supporting the progression of the project portfolios, as follows. The incumbent :

+ Is the Head of Global Immunobiology (a combination of part of former Research in Marcy and Cambridge and of FluNXT Cambridge). (S)he has oversight of the preclinical research to support the early and late stage portfolios and administers the personnel in charge: management of multidisciplinary staff members: 50HC,

+ Is an active player in the development of the new organization and Research transformation, and must ensure that people and processes are in motion by driving the change positively, by promoting new mindsets boosting innovation, new ways of working and project centricity,

+ Directly contributes to strategic decisions for Global Immunology, as part of the leadership team and permanent member of the PTSF (Preclinical & Translational Strategic Forum), and beyond, in R&D, as permanent member of RDSLT, and thereby must ensure that all objectives of his department are aligned with the strategic decisions of the projects and with the company objectives/vision,

+ Is accountable for making sure that strategic objectives & priorities of global Research are well designed, organized, delivered in a timely fashion and within budget, monitored and aligned with the strategic intent of the GBU and of sanofi global R&D, with the support of the executive manager of the function and by interacting with the relevant support function: Finance, project management...

+ Has the responsibility for ensuring that all non-clinical immunopharmacology strategies are agreed with the projects and their operational execution to best support the progression of the biologics portfolios: early, late and LCMV projects. It encompasses activities all along the R&D value chain: entry into the portfolio, proof of concept of candidates, and support to their translation into pharmaceutical products for registration

+ Must be at then forefront of the innovation (science, processes, digital, and operating models) and constantly ready to challenge the Status Quo.

+ Has the responsibility to closely link with his/her peers within the global Immunology function and contribute to the leadership team and governance of the overall function. The incumbent is also accountable for global strategic and operational alignments on project supports, with the other function of Sanofi Pasteur (VIA, ComOps and R&D) and with his SANOFI counterparts (pharma) in order to best leverage assets within the group.

+ Is responsible for the application in his/her department of all required quality standards GRP, GCLP as appropriate, and supervises compliances with both sanofi and governments regulations to ensure that all employees work within the policies and procedures

This role is a new and strategic one to transform Vaccine Research towards a more innovative and agile engine delivering new vaccines, along with the newly formed functions (mRNA CoE, Ag design...). This critical role of head of preclinical Research will provide a high degree of facilitation and support to the Global Head of Immunology and his leadership team for the progression of the NV portfolio. The incumbent will also act as the main ambassador liaison of the function with other Immunology Research entities across the Sanofi group and with the external ecosystem globally. Such a position is also an opportunity to bolster excellence in management skills and to take a key transversal role to accelerate your career development and to qualify for key leadership or executive positions.


**Oversight of the global preclinical immunobiology department**

Being fully aware of the Pharmaceutical environment and of the long-term needs of the company, contribute through this leader position to strategic decision related to immunological performance to ensure short, mid and long-term profitability of the NV portfolio

+ Be responsible to steer and guide the science and the management of global Preclinical Immunobiology. In close collaboration with executive manager, and with the relevant support functions, be accountable for the management of internal and external budgets, Quality, compliance to external regulatory guidelines and internal Sanofi guidelines

+ Ensure proper balance between internal and outsourcing activities to optimize resource utilization and foster a culture of excellence in operating support to projects

+ Monitor project and activity progress to manage efficiently. Map core competencies, identify gaps and ensure the right coverage by constant adjustments

+ Develop a comprehensive knowledge of potential new Infectious Diseases biologic targets, technologies and enabling science that could help addressing unmet medical needs

+ For NV projects ensures departmental tactic and approaches, strategy and velocity and assess their impact on resources following prioritization

+ Ensures transparency and understanding of R&D upper management decisions towards the department by appropriate cascading of information

**Delivery of all NV pipeline milestones: excellence in design and execution**

+ With a project centric mindset, for the best selection and assessment of approaches to new vaccine or mAb targets provided by the mRNA Co and or the Ag design teams, be accountable for:

+ Establishing criteria for demonstrating and documenting preclinical PoC and for the identification of correlates/surrogates of protection for selected targets

+ Developing and running the most relevant models and assays to measure the immune performance of the NV project candidates

+ Through the representation in project teams, take into account regulatory, clinical, IP, marketing and industrialization limitations on available approaches

+ In supporting the projects for the translation and transformation of the biologic candidates (with a demonstrated PoC) into pharmaceutical products

+ In close interaction with the peers within Global Immunology, ensure the selection of the best path forward and operational execution for the preclinical pharmacology studies in animal models and in in vitro systems to demonstrate product performance before first in man and along the clinical development as needed (CMI)

+ As projects move forwards, contribute to establishing a strong IP position and support a strong external communication strategy to strengthen the external perception of SP R&D as being a partner of choice

+ Ensures active participation of the function on Project decision making by aligning contribution at relevant advisory committees or decision-making bodies

+ Ensure that the global Preclinical Immunobiology objectives (and R&D whenever applicable) are completed within the agreed timelines and cost, and with the expected quality.

+ Ensure that Good Practices and data management are applied

+ Demonstrate and percolate within the organization a Play to Win leadership behavior (walk the talk) and provide guidance and psychological safety to take the Research organization towards its own transformation. Define and implement a strategic engagement plan to embark the teams into this new global preclinical Immunobiology department and its lean implementation globally

+ Develop an unrivaled talent development plan that matches people's competencies & experience, and training with business needs

+ Together with the head of the Agile/Scrum office in Research, define the plan to deploy the new ways of working within the functions and ensure is proper buy-in and deployment.

**People Development and Performance**

This position is responsible for all people resources within the global Preclinical immunobiology: 50 HC

+ Manages direct reports, and through them, others in their departments or functional area to achieve high levels of employee commitment, productivity and retention
