JOB DESCRIPTION

Title: Environmental Analyst Department: Laboratory Services

Job Purpose Statement: Plan and perform activities involving the analysis of waste water, surface water, drinking waters as well as sludges and air to determine the concentration of metals, conventional and organic pollutants by wet chemical and instrumentation methods, calculate and report results utilizing required Quality Control and Quality Assurance protocols.

Reporting Structure: Supervisor, Laboratory Services

Job Functions:

1. Perform wet chemistry and/or instrumental analysis following E.P.A. approved methodologies and lab accreditation rules. Evaluate appropriate aliquot for type of analysis required, perform prescribed analytical tests and calculate and report test results.

2. Responsible for sample preparation including digestion, concentration, dilutions, extractions and separations and sample preservations

3. Exercise best professional and analytical judgment to evaluate calibration and standards data.

4. Utilize computer program to calculate, evaluate and report analytical results.

5. Maintain, calibrate and troubleshoot equipment problems as required.

6. Maintain clear and complete documentation of raw data, analytical results and chain of custody in lab data books.

7. Interact with other internal laboratory staff to communicate effectively concerning sample characteristics and required analyses.

8. Maintain adequate supplies of fresh reagents and standards.

9. Report completed data on appropriate sample sheets as necessary.

10. Follow established safety procedures for chemical handling, cleanup and personal protection.

11. Participate in the review and modification of test methods and write standard operating procedures for laboratory procedure manual.

Instrumentation equipment such as analytical balance, pH meter, ISE meters, DO meters, nephelometer, titration equipment, distillation apparatus, Seal Discrete Analyzer, Mercury Cold Vapor Analyzer and ICP-MS. Office equipment such as calculator, photo copier, and computer.

Job Qualification Requirements

Knowledge: Bachelor's degree in chemistry or related field, computer literacy, thorough knowledge of analytical techniques, both wet and instrumental, solid understanding of college level math including statistics, linear regression, knowledgeable in chemical safety. Read, speak and write fluent English language.

Experience: Over 1 year up to 3 years.

Company DescriptionThe North Shore Water Reclamation District (NSWRD) is a municipal body which was organized in 1914 under the North Shore Sanitary District Act of 1911. The NSWRD owns and operates more than 100 miles of intercepting sewer lines and 10 pumping stations which collect and convey wastewater from local sewer systems to Water Reclamation Facilities (WRFs) in Gurnee, Waukegan, and Highland Park, Illinois. The District's mission is to defend and preserve our natural resources and it is dedicated to the beneficial reuse of our water resources.
