The School of Environmental Sustainability (SES; www.luc.edu/sustainability) at Loyola University Chicago (LUC; www.luc.edu) invites applications for a full-time, tenure track position in Ecology at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, beginning fall 2022. Area of specialization is open and people with expertise in urban ecology, soil ecology, and/or microbial ecology are particularly encouraged to apply. SES is a multidisciplinary school and candidates whose work connects the ecological and social sciences are also encouraged. The successful candidate is expected to establish an externally funded research program that leads to high quality publications and includes both undergraduate and graduate students.

The successful applicant will be required to teach the Ecology lecture and lab courses, upper-level and graduate courses in their area of specialty, and introductory environmental science courses for undergraduate and graduate students. Skills in statistical programming (e.g., R) are required. Opportunities will be available to teach field-based courses at the Loyola University Retreat and Ecology Campus in McHenry County. Teaching load is normally two courses per semester.

LUC has transformed its campuses to meet energy, water, and waste efficiencies that have consistently ranked the university in the top 5% of greenest U.S. campuses. Environmental Sustainability is a new interdisciplinary school that serves 380 undergraduate and 70 graduate students within a state-of-the-art geo-thermally heated/cooled building complex that includes a greenhouse, aquaponics facilities, a biodiesel production facility, teaching and research labs, and a ‘green’ dormitory. The university prioritizes sustainability with 13 energy efficient LEED certified buildings, permeable pavement, green roof installations, and student-run urban gardens supplying the LUC Farmer’s Market.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a PhD in Ecology or a closely related field. Experience overcoming or helping others overcome barriers to degree completion or an academic career is also desirable. The candidate must share Loyola University Chicago’s Jesuit commitment to social justice, care for our common home, and walking with the excluded, ideally evidenced through their research, teaching and/or service. Candidates for the position should have a record of or clear potential for distinguished scholarship, external research funding, and student mentorship.

Applicants should submit a current Curriculum Vita, a letter of interest outlining their qualifications, a teaching statement with materials demonstrating teaching expertise, a research statement, samples of scholarly writing, and the names and contact details of three people who are willing to write letters of recommendation (if requested) to https://www.careers.luc.edu/.   Address questions to:
