Position Summary:If you are interested in the opportunity to work aboard one of the most advanced university research vessels in the world apply today! The R/V SIKULIAQ is a 261-foot oceanographic research ship capable of bringing scientists to the ice-choked waters of Alaska and the polar regions. We are currently accepting applications for temporary relief Chief Mate.

Duties:

Chief Mate - Relief, under Master''s direction, will assist with the shipboard management of administration including personnel, payroll, inventory control, purchase requests, accounting, logs and records, operating reports and radio-electronic bridge communications. As Chief Mate-Relief manage shipboard personnel in accordance with UA and SIKULIAQ guidelines. Provide assistance in the support of the computerized inventory, maintenance and management system.Essential

Participate and oversee voyage planning and shipboard operations as directed by the Master (or Chief Mate) in coordination with Principal Investigators, scientists, students, Chief Engineer, Senior Cook and Shipboard Science Systems Support personnel to support science missions. As Chief Mate - Relief, under the direction of the Master, conn the vessel when docking, undocking and during difficult or unusual navigational situations or operations. Stand Bridge watches as required. As Chief Mate - Relief, assist the Master with overall responsibility for all vessel operations, safety, crew welfare, vessel material readiness and regulatory compliance. Under the Master''s direction, assist with the coordination of all vessel department heads (Engineering and Steward) to assess vessel''s material condition and allocate personnel and material resources to maintain vessel in accordance with UA and Owner''s requirements. Supervise junior mates and deck crew; assign and manage effective housekeeping, maintenance and repair, loading, stowage and unloading activities. Delegation of areas of responsibility to department heads with appropriate oversight, while ensuring successful accomplishment of mission and vessel requirements.Essential

The ship''s Chief Mate-Relief serves at the direction of the Master who is in overall command of all personnel and operations aboard the R/V Sikuliaq. The Master is responsible for managing the safety, security, legal aspects and effectiveness of the research vessel, crew and scientists. Chief Mate - Relief, at the direction of the Master, will have reporting responsibilities to include the vessel safety, security, legal and effectiveness of the research vessel, crew and scientists. Work is performed under long-range administrative direction,with UAF-Seward Marine Center (SMC) and Master, Sikuliaq. This position requires at-sea experience, familiarity with oceanographic research ship operations, associated regulatory and budgetary constraints under which they are conducted. Position directs the planned logistics and prepares vessel for upcoming science missions in coordination with the Master, Chief Engineer (1st Assistant/Relief Chief Engineer), Chief Mate, Senior Cook and SMC Marine Superintendent, Port Engineer and Shipboard Science Systems Support Personnel.Essential

Under the Master''s direction, conduct all onboard and at sea small boat emergency drills and inspections to ensure crew preparedness and the safety of the ship in accordance with USCG, ISM, ABS, NSF, UAF and Maritime requirements. Ensure all documentation and regulations for inspections, Customs, Immigration, Homeland Security, Agriculture and Hazardous Material/Waste are maintained, posted, and followed as mandated. Included, but not limited to disposal of bilge water, waste water, chemicals and garbage. Assess and direct officer and crew training in accordance with ISM and UA science missions.Essential

The Chief Mate-Relief of the R/V SIKULIAQ serves at the direction of the Master, who is in overall command of all personnel and operations aboard the R/V SIKULIAQ. The Chief Mate - Relief will assist in and managing the global class, oceanographic research vessel, of the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS). The Chief Mate - Relief, at the direction of the Master will have reporting responsibilities to include, vessel safety, training, security, legal effectiveness of the research vessel, crew and scientists aboard. This position requires at-sea experience and familiarity with oceanographic research ship operations in support of ocean research, with a primary emphasis in high latitudes. The Chief Mate- Relief, assists/directs the planned logistics and prepares vessel for science missions in coordination with the vessel Engineering, Stewards, Deck, and Shipboard Science Systems Support Personnel. May be required to fulfill collateral duties as the Medical person in charge. SIKULIAQ will have a crew of 22 (9 deck; 8 engineering; 3 steward; 2 Shipboard Science Systems Support personnel)

The R/V SIKULIAQ is operated by the University of Alaska Fairbanks - Seward Marine Center with home port Seward, Alaska. The Seward Marine Center (SMC) campus is a 13 acre field station under the College of Fisheries & Ocean Sciences on the waterfront of Resurrection Bay (seewww.seward.com).

The 261' global class research vessel will have a full load displacement of 3665 LT's. The diesel electric propulsion system operation utilizes an integrated power plant concept, providing 5750hp of propulsion power through frequency drives and a/c main motors to two fully azimuthing z-drives. This is a Temp position, Grade 80.

Qualified applicants must possess a current valid U.S. Coast Guard Unlimited Oceans Chief Mate of Motor Any Gross Tons Upon Oceans license and Merchant Mariners Credential. Radar Observer Unlimited endorsement; GMDSS Operator, Vessel Security Officer, TWIC, U.S. Passport. Education and experience to perform the duties expected aboard an ocean going research vessel. Applicant must submit ECDIS, BST, VSO, & GMDSS (in MMC) Documentation (either in MMC or proof of completion) and Medical PIC.

Applicants will be required to provide documentation of participation in random drug testing program for at least 60 of the preceding 185 days, did not have any positive test results, and did not refuse to take a required test. If not under employment, where a random drug testing program exists, the applicant shall provide a completed test indicating they are free of illegal substance abuse, when requested by Seward Marine Center, prior to employment. Testing will be for the presence of cocaine, opiates, marijuana (THC), amphetamines and PCP (phencyclidine). Testing will be in accordance with the Department of Transportation Program and testing shall be in accordance with United States Coast Guard Drug and Alcohol Testing guidelines outlined in the Federal Register 46 C.F.R. 4, 5, and 16.
