Newport News Nuclear BWXT Los Alamos (N3B) manages the 10-year, $1.38 billion Los Alamos Legacy Cleanup Contract for the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Environmental Management, Los Alamos Field Office.

N3B is a limited liability company owned by HII Nuclear Inc. and BWX Technologies, joined by our critical subcontractors Longenecker and Associates and Tech2 Solutions.

N3B brings operational discipline, proven approaches and predictable results to the Los Alamos Legacy Cleanup Contract.

Position Location:

This position is located in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

COVID Vaccination Mandate:

N3B is required by contract to comply with the Safer Federal Workforce Task Force Guidance concerning implementation of Executive Order 14043. Position Summary

This position reports to the N3B Low Level Waste Disposition Manager within the CH-TRU LLW Programs Organization, and is responsible for supporting waste management activities and support for Environmental Remediation (ER) and /or TA 54. Specific duties may include, but are not limited to, inspecting waste storage containers and facilities, and ensuring compliant handling and documentation of solid, liquid, hazardous, radioactive, and/or mixed wastes, and overall waste management activities as assigned..

As an Environmental Professional 3 you will work under the supervision of the Waste Disposition Manager and/or a Qualified Waste Management Coordinator (WMC) to support waste management/shipping activities. Specific duties may include, but are not limited to handling, packaging, storing drums and/or other containers of waste, track waste containers, coordinate waste transportation activities, mobilize/demobilize waste containers, receive/escort transport vehicles to/from waste storage areas, manage RCRA waste storage areas including knowledge of chemical storage, segregation, and handling requirements.

Environmental Professional 3 will also contribute to Integrated Work Documents, Detailed Operating Procedures, or other work planning documents, track waste in the Waste Compliance and Tracking System (WCATS), and assist in management of the waste storage, packaging, and shipping staging areas for the safe and compliant management of LLW materials from the point of generation through final disposition.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities (may include, but are not limited to):

  • Waste Management Coordinators Support (TA-21, Aggregate Areas, Water Group) to include, but not limited to the following:
    • Waste Package Inspection
    • WCATS Entry for changes in field (e.g. new empty container receipt, content description, key start dates, etc.)
    • Establishment / Management of Storage Areas (CAAs, SAAs, RAD Storage, etc.) as required
    • Performs Waste Storage Inspections as defined in N3B-P409, confirming integrity,
    • location, and labeling
    • Establishes / maintains / inspects SAA & CAA areas for ER Locations
    • Waste Management support as required to support all ER waste generating activities (LLW, MLLW


Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities):
  • Ability to have major impact on organizational success and productivity, with extensive latitude for independent judgment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively at the highest levels.
  • Level of language skills, mathematical skills, communication skills, reasoning ability and computer skills necessary to perform essential functions of the job.
  • Strong background (5 years minimum) of hands on work in Waste Management
  • Extensive knowledge of RCRA & TSCA requirements for packaging, marking, labeling & managing waste.
  • Understanding of LLW packaging & management of wastes (435.1)
  • Familiarity with waste characterization, profiling & TSDF WAC
  • Regulatory compliance mentality
  • Initiative, dedication to seeing a project to completion

General Management Skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and public speaking skills, with ability to convey information and represent the organization to both internal and external customers to effectively communicate progress, challenges, and mitigations.


Education and Experience Required:

Bachelors' degree combined with 5 years' relative experience. However, a combination of education and relevant experience wherein the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the position's duties and responsibilities have been adequately demonstrated is acceptable.

Education Equivalency: 2 years of relevant experience for 1 year of college.

Waste Management Coordinator (WMC) and or HMPT Qualified desired.

Radiological and Hazardous Waste Characterization experience is desired.

Experience utilizing WCATS (read and write), and Waste Profile Systems from various TSDF.

Business Associations:

Frequent inter-organizational and outside customer contacts. Represents organization in providing solutions to difficult technical issues associated with specific projects.

Impact:

Contributes to completion of specific programs and projects. Failure to obtain results or erroneous decisions or recommendations would typically result in serious program delays and considerable expenditure of resources.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

Normally assigned to perform work in an office environment. Only electrical hazards and other minor potential hazards normally found in an office environment are anticipated. Job performance requires adequate visual acuity and manual dexterity for meeting the requirements of the discipline. Office work environment.

While working to achieve N3B LLCC objectives, the Environmental Professional will ensure all activities and operations are performed in a safe and deliberate manner to include protecting the confidentiality and integrity of Personally Identifiable Information (PII). This role will maintain required safety, security and operational training; assure procedural and regulatory compliance; and make safety, security and quality an integral part of every task; including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security. Ability to obtain an L or Q level Department of Energy security clearance.
