ANTICIPATED VACANCY
The Freshwater Mussel Conservation Program (FMCP) is seeking a freshwater biologist for the Gainesville branch of the mussel program. The entry-level knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) needed to perform job duties are: Knowledge of field methods used to sample freshwater mussels and/or other freshwater invertebrates. Knowledge of literature and techniques used to identify freshwater mussels and/or other freshwater invertebrates. Ability to curate collections of freshwater invertebrates. Strong ability to swim in outdoor settings. Ability to skin dive using mask, snorkel, and weight belt. Ability or desire to obtain AAUS SCUBA diving certification. Ability to conduct vigorous aquatic field work outdoors for long hours in harsh weather conditions that may include rain, high winds, high temperatures, low temperatures, alligators, snakes, and biting insects. Knowledge of operation of handheld GPS units. Knowledge of operation, trailering, and basic maintenance of boats. Ability to frequently conduct overnight travel for up to four consecutive nights, sometimes for successive weeks. Ability to operate a computer with Windows operating system. Ability to function in a team environment. Ability to work independently. Ability to record data accurately. Ability to assist project leader with communication of study results in written reports, peer-reviewed scientific publications, and oral presentations. Ability to complete assigned tasks on, or before, deadlines. Ability to use Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel, knowledge of Microsoft Access is desired but not required. Ability to manage Excel databases and data entry. Working knowledge of basic ArcGIS operations is highly desired but not a requirement.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Field sampling of freshwater mussel communities in streams, springs, and lakes using a variety of methods that may include wading, snorkeling, and SCUBA diving Measurement of environmental parameters concurrent with mussel sampling using a variety of electronic equipment that may include flow meters, multi-probe units, and GPS units. Accurate recording of mussel counts and field measurements on field sheets. Boat operation and trailering of boats to and from sample sites.

2. Species level identification of freshwater mussels and other aquatic invertebrates in field and lab situations.

3. Data entry and curation for the freshwater mussel database, vouchered collections, and other databases as needed.

4. Assist Project Leader and/or Team Lead with production of annual reports, scientific publications, posters, and presentations.

5. Maintenance of laboratory equipment including meters, scales, and microscopes.

6. Maintenance of field equipment including vehicles, boats, motors, trailers, suction samplers, and mussel sampling gear.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the biological sciences and one year of professional biological experience in a field or laboratory program; or a master's degree from an accredited college or university in one of the biological sciences.
** Preference may be given to candidates that possess a master's degree in one of the biological sciences from an accredited college or university.

WHAT IS OPS EMPLOYMENT? Other Personal Services (OPS) temporary employer/employee relationship used solely for accomplishing short term or intermittent tasks. OPS employees do not fill established positions and may not be assigned the duties of any vacant authorized position. OPS employees are at-will employees and are subject to actions such as pay changes, changes to work assignment and terminations at the pleasure of the agency head or designee.
