Role Description

You will scope and establish a coatings project within the Cathode Team, dedicated to finding the right materials and coating processes to improve the performance and cost of our electrodes. This role is primarily hands-on and lab focused. You will be responsible for identifying promising catalyst candidates and formulating appropriate inks + binders. You will specify, purchase and set up equipment for your project and establish a baseline performance for your coating process. You will then use statistical DOE to optimize the performance of the coating. The ideal candidate will have experience with water electrolysis, mixed metal oxide catalysts, or dimensionally stable anodes.

What You'll Do
  • Develop electroactive coatings for aqueous air electrodes
  • Use electrochemical data to scope, bench trial and then down-select a coating process
  • Engage suppliers, specify, procure and set up the required equipment while maintaining strict adherence to safety standards
  • Evaluate catalyst materials and design binder systems for electroactive inks
  • Ink formulation
  • Develop deep understanding of coating/ substrate interactions
  • Material characterization of coatings
  • Coordinate electrochemical testing of new electrode materials
  • Optimization of your coating process towards company KPIs
  • Drive understanding of these coatings and their performance in the Form Battery
  • Thoroughly document your work in accordance with company policy

What You'll Bring
  • Experience in a coating technology or parallel field
  • Experience in ink formulation, binder design, catalyst selection and surface preparation
  • Experience in batteries/ fuel cells/ electrolysis is preferred although not essential
  • Strong Materials or Process background
  • Ability to lead a project independently
  • Ability to downselect and stand up a new process from scratch
  • Ability to engage with suppliers and be an ambassador for the company
  • A commitment to safety
  • Ability to work with a diverse team
  • Curiosity and attention to detail
  • Experience with process optimization
  • Experience with SEM, XRD, XRF, BET are a plus
  • Experience with ink coating processes are a plus
  • Degree requirements: Bachelor's in Material Science, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or other related field.
  • Years of experience: 3-5+ (level will be commensurate with experience)
