Job Description

An Environmental Health and Safety Specialist plans, directs, organizes, coordinates, and supervises the activities of the Environmental Health and Safety Unit.

The primary objective of the role is to enhance the safety of our employees and our site environmental sustainability through prevention, developing a culture of caring where the function is ingrained as a core value. The position ensures compliance of all EH&S aspects of the worksites in alignment with corporate policy and common practices.

Tasks
  • Directs, coordinates, and ensures that effective operations of the functions of the Environmental and Safety department
  • Selects, supervises, trains, motivates and disciplines staff
  • Plans, develops, implements, and evaluates the Safety Programs to ensure safe operating and working environments
  • Coordinates safety training efforts for all Santa Fe Foods sites
  • Responsible for management, enforcement, and support of Santa Fe Foods hazards communication program
  • Analyzes Workers Compensation and Liability claims data and develops and implements Loss Control Programs for reduction of accidents and injuries
  • Coordinates facility activities of diverse and complex scop to reduce the risk of human injury, potential liabilities and loss of company assets
  • Directs and performs review of plans, specifications, equipment, and vehicles to ensure compliance with established and accepted industrial and safety standards and codes
  • Develops and maintains accident statistical basses for internal and external reporting
  • Prepares and presents a variety of reports, correspondence and other related documents


Employment Standards

  • Sufficient training, education and experience in developing and managing safety programs to demonstrate required knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Industrial safety standards and local State and Federal safety rules and regulations and their application


  • Federal, State, and local (city or county) laws and regulations applicable to the handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous material
  • Principles and practices of administration, organization, management analysis, supervision, fiscal management, and program development
  • Define problem areas, evaluate, recommend and implement solutions to complex issues and problems
  • Prepare and present (written and oral) clear and comprehensive correspondence, reports, and other documents relating to areas of responsibility
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contracted in the course of work
  • Manages and conducts audits
  • Conducts ergonomic worksite and/or task evaluations
  • Attends facilities meetings in corporate once a month for the monthly safety review
  • Uses a variety of software applications to research, compose reports, analyze data, and present information using written and multimedia strategies
  • Evaluate new income ng material streams for compatibility without permits and programs
  • Develop and prepare training materials related to environmental compliance
  • Serve as a member of the on-site emergency response team
  • Risk Assessment by implementing of risk prediction to ensure effective identification and mitigating of hazards.
  • Ensures an investigation of all incidents/accidents to drive to the root cause and identify actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Develops safety support, coaching, and providing feedback.
  • Leads effective safety training.


In this role you will have the opportunity to:
  • Review plans and specifications for construction or installation of new equipment to ensure all safe-workplace requirements have been met
  • Implement a strategy that effectively utilizes proactive (preventative and predictive) maintenance/EHS techniques and performance monitoring to detect early degradation and provide timely solutions to prevent failure
  • Inspect facilities, machinery, and safety equipment
  • Assess ergonomic conditions and environment not to identify potential hazards
  • Coordinate daily management EHS activities across the sites


Job Requirements
  • Required knowledge, skills and abilities is typically obtained through training and experience equivalent to bachelor's degree level or a related field; a relevant experience of 5 years.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA and Hazardous Waste Regulations
  • Must be able to work autonomously to identify and solve problems
  • Excellent computer, communication and interpersonal skills


  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Must be capable of working in a fast-paced environment with minimal direct supervision and have strong leadership, interpersonal, and self-initiative skills
  • Demonstrated ability to drive sustainable organizational change
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong cross-functional teams capable of delivering results
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and influence across a diverse range of people from corporate leadership to a store associate
  • Demonstrated ability to think both strategically and tactically and quickly progress between the two
  • Good technical understanding of EHS&S issues and their relationship to production
  • Strong demonstrated verbal/written communications, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency with windows-based applications including Outlook, Microsoft, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • The employee much frequently lifts, carry, push or pull up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift, carry, push or pull up to 50 pounds
  • Must be able to commute to all 9 worksites


Serves as a liaison for regulatory agencies and/or communities such as:
  • Fire Department
  • Osha
  • Health Department of the city (Health Department)
