In this Microbiology Support Technician position, you will follow standard operating procedures to prepare clinical specimens (e.g., blood, body fluids, tissue, sputum specimens) for microbiological analysis by the Medical Technologist to demonstrate an infectious agent.
  • Evaluate requests for accuracy and completeness, place orders, and verify labeling/identification, and follow appropriate protocols.
  • Utilize sterile techniques to process a variety of clinical specimens (e.g., blood, body fluids, tissue, sputum specimens) submitted for microbiologic analysis.
  • Perform waive test analysis on patient specimens.
  • Prepare direct smears. Process specimens for Parasite Examination, AFB Culture and smear evaluation.
  • Process instrument-flagged positive blood cultures up to point of interpretation, including aliquot, smear preparation/staining and direct antibiotic susceptibility testing.
  • Prepare solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures. Perform and document reagent and media quality control as established by protocols. Report unacceptable results to QC Lead Tech.
  • Check temperatures for freezers, refrigerators, incubators, and dry baths, and record temperature range as appropriate, or notify QC Lead/Supervisor for remedial action.
  • Monitor inventory levels, and order materials and supplies, in accordance with established policies and procedures; verify order upon receipt.
  • Collect glassware and biological waste from the Microbiology Lab, and autoclave materials to sterilize.
  • Keep records (e.g., maintenance logs, worksheets) in a neat, organized and legible manner. Prepare routine reports including, but not limited to, culture review, daily statistics, QA and nosocomial reports for infection control, overdue test log, AFB sendout, etc.

  • Associate's Degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology, obtained from an accredited institution, or two years post-secondary education or experience in a laboratory science.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory equipment (e.g., biological safety cabinet, centrifuge, cytocentrifuge, and autoclave), including maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Working knowledge of specimen collection, and handling requirements for microbiologic assays.
  • Working knowledge of computer systems such as Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office programs.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks in a high stress environment; ability to work quickly and with a high degree of accuracy; ability to work independently and handle variable workloads; strong computer skills; excellent communication skills; and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to perform work that requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, squatting, kneeing, moving, lifting of equipment up to 50 pounds.

Preferred: 1 year of previous experience in a clinical laboratory setting and/or 1 year of previous experience in a Clinical Microbiology laboratory
