Focus on Reducing Drought Risk

USDA Forest Service - Research Triangle Park, NC

Project Work:

Perform services as an Environmental Technician (ET) within the USDA Southeast Climate Hub (SERCH) administered by the USDA Forest Service Southern Research Station. The mission of the SERCH is to generate knowledge, tools and publications to increase the resiliency of working lands (i.e., forest, range and agriculture) to environment stress and change. These outputs are distributed to working landowners through websites, hard copy publications, webinar and workshops.

The Environmental Technician will assist in fulfilling an agreement with the NOAA NIDIS, USDA Forest Service, and partners to work cooperatively on the project: "Addressing Information Gaps for Reducing Agricultural Drought Risk in the Southeast." This project will develop a commodity-specific production fact sheet/decision calendar to help farmers make climate-informed decisions related to drought and flood planning and improve the access and use of drought impact reporting to improve monitoring and early warning systems in order to reduce lost farm productivity. The ET will assist with literature searches to summarize:
  • How climate variability, trends, and forecasts will impact agricultural production cycles, determine how environmental stress has impacted commodity specific management practices;
  • Identify and prioritize commercially important commodities that can best benefit from modifications to traditional management due to drought, work with user groups (e.g., Extension, NRCS field staff) to develop a commodity-based decision calendar with suggested actions to be taken during drought and other extreme events such as flooding;
  • Work with State Climatologists, Extension, and Drought Monitor authors to assess current drought impact reporting across the southeast Drought Early Warning System region and identify information gaps and opportunities improvement and collaboration.

Specific duties of the ET will include but are not limited to the following:
  • Working with the USDA Southeast Climate Hub director, coordinator and other hub staff on both short (i.e., less than a day) and longer (i.e., longer than a day) projects associated with the work.
  • Working with partners for inputs, collaboration and review of outputs.
  • Compiling information and data and developing a logical organization of the content.
