Position Overview

The Data Storytelling team is hiring a Data Scientist who is interested in working across the data story lifecycle: ideation, data curation, data annotation using our proprietary algorithms/developing new models, and content creation. In this role, you will report directly to our Data Storytelling Lead, and will be part of the growing marketing team at Primer.

The Data Storytelling team creates immersive and meaningful experiences highlighting how NLP can solve real-world problems. We are a small but mighty cross-functional team of data scientists, content writers, and engineers with some former journalists amongst the group. We source and create our own stories and partner with select philanthropic organizations, individuals, and academia to help them drive their mission forward and tell their stories. Some of the stories we are working on include climate change, disinformation, and COVID-19.

What You'll Bring To This Role

• Source diverse data sets, develop hypotheses, and rapidly test them; rinse, repeat, and refine the process until you find that golden insight to hang your story on
• Train new ML models to guide story development
• Build interactive visualizations that tell a compelling data story
• Drive engagement with our partners and customers to scope and build custom solutions that have a meaningful impact on their work
• Partner with your team members to ideate on new story angles and build the story pipeline
  
  

What We Value

• 2+ years of Python experience
• Constantly curious: when you look at an algorithm or data set, your mind immediately goes to"wouldn't it be cool if…." and you start to tinker
• Capability to go deep down rabbit holes and identify when it's time to withdraw when there is "no there there".
• Experience working with APIs
• Understanding of NLP topics, including event and topic detection, named entity extraction, relation extraction, text classification and sentiment analysis models, and an interest in new technologies and applications
• Hands-on experience with machine learning and NLP tools and libraries such as Numpy, Scipy, Scikit-learn, SpaCy, NLTK
• Ability to think about solutions from a customer perspective, establish conceptual connections between requirements and solutions
• Desire to teach teammates and learn from others
• Comfort engaging directly with customers and partners - from data scientist to C-level
• A pro at building relationships quickly, working cross-functionally, and overall a great team player
• A natural and creative storyteller with outstanding communication skills who takes pride and joy in evangelizing our mission and products
• A self-starter with strong planning and organizational skills, strong attention to detail
• Comfortable with ambiguity and operating in a dynamic, fast-moving environment
• Experience working with design and PR agencies and producing compelling content
