Requirements

Axcella Health is seeking a Senior Scientist to join our dynamic Research Team in Cambridge, MA in a pipeline development position. In this role, s/he will work with internal and external stakeholders leading early discovery projects to identify and advance novel pipeline opportunities and the development of combination products. A deep understanding of EMM biology, especially amino acids, and their role in human disease, is highly desirable. Experience in early discovery, broad expertise working across multiple disease areas, and exceptional ability to learn biology in new areas are required. The candidate will collaborate across systems biology, computational sciences, biology, and clinical to identify and bring forward clinically relevant pipeline opportunities and advance these opportunities into the clinic, in addition to being a key partner in the development of platform capabilities. The candidate will be expected to thrive in the fast-paced, dynamic, and nimble environment of a biotech company that depends on strong collaboration internally (e.g. clinical, clinical pharmacology, computational biology) and externally (e.g. academics and CROs).
Responsibilities
  • Identification and vetting of new and expansion opportunities
  • Work across R&D, including systems biology, computational and data sciences, and clinical to drive and prioritize novel opportunities
  • Collaborate cross-functionally in R&D to develop novel EMM combinations in newly identified areas
  • Engage and work with external experts and KOLs to identify, evaluate and develop novel opportunities.
  • Partner cross-functionally to build out platform capabilities required for product pipeline success
  • Reporting and documentation of research and non-clinical activities for regulatory purposes e.g. IND, filing
  • Represent Research in cross-functional Early Development Teams
  • Leverage a network of external CROs, scientific advisors, and consultants
  • Prepare effective materials for publications, posters and meetings, and corporate presentations
Skills and Attributes
  • Broad biology expertise and experience in early discovery.
  • Executing on and advancing novel pipeline opportunities into the clinic.
  • Experience and understanding of systems biology principles and application in early discovery
  • Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams
  • Solutions-oriented with strong problem solving and influencing skills
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate project team meetings, enhance cross-functional communication, support decision making, influence outcomes, and ensure alignment among internal (and sometimes external) stakeholders
  • Proven ability to collaborate and communicate cross-functionally with Clinical and Commercial teams
  • Knowledge of regulatory space and knowledge of the role of research in early and late clinical development
  • Ability and experience presenting work internally and externally
Education and Experience
  • Ph.D. in systems biology, molecular biology, biological engineering, biological sciences, or relevant field with a minimum of 6+ years of relevant experience.
