Associate Director, Industry

• Scaling solutions: Our collaborative Global Programs - focused on solution areas including carbon dioxide removal, cooling, industry, transportation, and more - produce results that are bending the greenhouse gas emissions curve. From the U.S. to Europe, China, Brazil, and beyond, we collaborate with a diverse community of funders, NGOs, and climate leaders to accelerate just and equitable climate solutions.
• Guiding and supporting funders: We provide Global Services provide funders with comprehensive resources to assess, build, evolve, and execute high-impact climate-giving strategies. Our Global Intelligence service equips funders and the climate community with climate insights to pinpoint opportunities for impact and philanthropic insights to help identify investment priorities. We facilitate Global Collaborations that enable funders to increase individual and collective impact. Our Global Grantmaking services enable funders to invest in climate solutions around the world.
• Fostering collaboration, exploration, and growth: Our collaborative approach and commitment to learning ensures that we continuously explore innovative ideas and emerging opportunities - all with the aim of scaling philanthropy-supported initiatives to help end the climate crisis.

About the Industry Program

Our Industry Program seeks to ensure that people everywhere have access to goods, materials, buildings, and infrastructure they need without harming the climate. Unfortunately, today one-third of greenhouse gases come from manufacturing, mining, building, and disposing of those products and materials. We focus on the most GHG-intensive industries-like steel, cement, and chemicals-that are the foundation for most industrial activities. We support a coalition of advocates, researchers, policymakers, consumers, businesses, and other stakeholders who are working together to transform the material economy. Our goal is to safeguard the climate while meeting everyone's material needs and supporting quality employment and equitable economic development.

Job Summary

Working directly with the Program Director, the Associate Director, Industry will support and guide the industry program as it expands rapidly. In addition to overall program management and strategy development, the Associate Director will lead our Buy Clean initiative on public procurement of greenhouse-gas-intensive industrial commodities, like steel and cement. This portfolio fosters markets for climate-safe commodities in the United States, Europe, and China.

The Associate Director will develop strategies in cooperation with the Program Director, identify potential partner and grantee organizations, do oversight and due diligence on our grantmaking, define and evaluate metrics for program performance, contribute to expanding the field of funders in this area, and build a cohesive coalition of stakeholders through effective communication and capacity building.

The Associate Director will work with program staff, grantees, funders, and other stakeholders to accelerate change in large and powerful industries. This person must thrive in collaborative environments, be comfortable working in different geographies, and be able to synthesize many types of knowledge to understand how to create political and social change in this sector.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Associate Director is responsible for the following duties:

• Support the Program Director with overall program management, including budgeting, planning, reporting, development, and strategy.
• Lead the Buy Clean portfolio, including developing its strategy in consultation with the Program Director.
• Identify and develop new grantees.
• Align overall program budget with portfolio strategy and ensuring timely disbursement of grants.
• Coordinate activities and knowledge exchange among coalition partners through written communications and convening online and in-person events.
• Develop and evaluate metrics of the overall program and the Buy Clean portfolio.
• Prepare and deliver communications including grant reports, presentations to internal and external audiences, blog posts, and other written and analytic materials.
• Function as a point of contact and representative of the Buy Clean portfolio.
• Identify and manage external consultants.
• Build effective relationships with global partners, including through international travel once pandemic conditions permit.

Required Qualifications

The successful applicant will have the following minimum qualifications:

• Strong program and project management skills.
• Excellent relationship management skills.
• Excellent written and oral communications skills.
• 6-8 years' experience in a program or project management role with at least 3 years of experience in a related field, including public procurement, heavy industry, commodities, or environmental advocacy.
• Commitment to the mission and values of ClimateWorks Foundation.
• Resourcefulness, good judgement, and a commitment to excellence and integrity.
• Ability to work effectively and efficiently (both virtually and in-person) with minimal supervision.
• A commitment to a diverse, inclusive, and equitable work environment.

Candidates with experience in public-sector procurement in the United States, Europe, or China will be prioritized. Procurement experience could be either on the government or the vendor side. Local, state, or national government experience are all acceptable.

• Political or advocacy strategy experience, for example with campaigns (NGO or electoral), legislatures, or government agencies.
• Advanced degree in engineering, policy, or another relevant field.
• Ability and willingness to travel as needed, likely at least one trip per quarter once Covid travel restrictions are lifted.
• Professional experience in China or continental Europe.

Compensation and Location

ClimateWorks offers an excellent benefits package and a competitive salary that is commensurate with experience ($120,000 per annum negotiable subject to experience). This position will be located in San Francisco, CA. Exceptional candidates who prefer to work from other locations may be considered, with geographic differential applied to compensation based on local cost of living.
