The University of Montevallo is seeking a full-time, tenure-track
Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies to expand the
environmental science component of our Environmental Studies
Program. We are open to candidates with diverse areas of interest,
including but not limited to Natural Resource Management, Climate
Change, Renewable Energy, Global Water Resources, etc. A Ph.D. in
environmental science or related field is required, although ABD
candidates will be considered; if hired ABD, the candidate would
serve as an Instructor until the doctorate is completed. Duties and
responsibilities include teaching 12 credit hours per semester
(three or four courses depending on labs), maintaining an active
research program, and service to the department, college, and
university. The successful applicant will be prepared to teach
introductory environmental science, at least one core major course
in environmental management/monitoring/data collection, and other
elective or required courses in the candidate's areas of expertise;

Candidates should be enthusiastic about growing a vibrant
interdisciplinary program and providing opportunities for
undergraduate engagement. Administrative duties may be available
depending on interest and skillset. The Assistant Professor of
Environmental Studies will serve as Vacca Scholar for a period of
two years, which will count toward the required years for tenure
and promotion. The following additional requirements will be
expected of the Vacca Scholar: providing one campus lecture or talk
per semester; conducting several brown-bag lunch talks over the
course of the academic year; and sharing research and scholarship
on an environmental topic. Limited funds will be available to the
Vacca Scholar for professional development and resources. We seek
candidates with a strong commitment to teaching, scholarship, and
environmental leadership, as well as an interest in conducting
research and teaching labs at UM facilities including Ebenezer
Swamp Ecological Preserve, University Lake, the UM Organic
Community Garden, and/or the James Wylie Shepherd Observatory.
