As a member of the Advanced Forestry Systems (AFS) team at Weyerhaeuser you will work on a diverse range of projects involving forest inventory, remote sensing, statistics, wood science, and other disciplines. You will be actively coding in python, R, SQL, C++, and C#, and developing cloud-based data pipelines, web apps, geospatial analytics, and machine learning applications. The AFS team's mission is to ensure the availability of reliable and cost-effective forest information for the optimal management of Weyerhaeuser land and timber. The AFS team is committed to fulfilling this mission by providing world-class data acquisition, analytical technologies, and support. This position is critical to fulfilling that mission.

The position is based out of the Weyerhaeuser headquarters building in the heart of Pioneer Square in downtown Seattle, with occasional travel to regional offices across the country. Due to COVID we are currently working from home and flexible work arrangements are available when a return to office is considered.

Roles & Responsibilities:

Develops, validates, and implements:
  • Large data workflows involving multiple database and computing platforms (including AWS), e.g., LiDAR point cloud data, satellite rasters, high resolution drone imagery.
  • Sophisticated analysis and models using large databases (SQL Server, Postgres) in standalone configurations or as components of decision support systems.
  • Distributed pipelines in AWS for automating the creation and processing of forest inventory data products (e.g., CI/CD runners).
  • Forest inventory data summarization and validation systems. Examples include forest growth models, log merchandizing algorithms, and harvest schedule optimization tools.
  • Communicates concepts, issues, and results to technical, non-technical, and geographically dispersed audiences.
  • Stays up to date with developments in the field of forest biometrics, data management, programming, and geospatial modeling.
Qualifications
Education: BS or MS in mathematics, computer science, geospatial analysis, biometrics, silviculture/biology, or related field preferred.

Technical Skills: Experience or training in programming, large databases, and cloud-computing required. Demonstrated proficiency in Python, SQL, Git, Linux, and AWS is essential. C++ competency and familiarity with geospatial data is preferred.

Drive: We are looking for someone who is eager to learn, engages with subject matter experts, and business clients; works well with their team; and who looks for opportunities to improve processes, while applying their technical expertise to ensure analytical rigor and effective implementation of our decision support tools in our Timberlands business environment.

Communication: Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential for working effectively with a diverse set of internal and external clients.
