BASICFUNCTION:Responsible for managing all livestock, land, buildings, fencing, equipment, and operating budgets associated with Peckham Farm. Collaborate with faculty and department Chair to coordinate farm operations to meet the needs of class, research, and services activities to support the academic programs of the department.

Duties and ResponsibilitiesESSENTIALDUTIESANDRESPONSIBILITIES:Responsible for daily animal care and management under strict regulatory guidelines (i.e., University of Rhode Island, IACUC, USDA, State of Rhode Island regulations, policies, and guidelines.)Maintain animal health and well-being, and oversees administration of vaccines and medications, under direction of the attending veterinarian or their designee. Provide needed documentation to attending veterinarian and/or their designee.Supervise and train students and other farm workers in tasks related to animal care to ensure efficient farm operations and the support of agricultural activities/education at Peckham Farm.Develop operational policies and plans for the university farm, in consultation with faculty.Maintain inventory, breeding, performance, production, and financial records for all university farm animals.Maintain herd records including pedigrees, production and performance records, and registrations.Oversee the selection of animals for sale and purchase with department faculty and chair, prepares and maintains sales records and reports.Oversee the management of livestock including implementation of proper feeding and nutrition program in consultation with faculty to ensure all animals are properly maintained and in healthy condition.Oversee the breeding of all farm animals, in consultation with faculty.Oversee pasture maintenance and quality hay production in consultation with faculty.Oversee and perform the operation, maintenance, and repair of farm implements and mechanical equipment, such as tractors, hay cutters, hay balers, plows, sprayers etc.Ensure that all animal-rearing facilities and equipment are in good operating condition, consistent with established safety standards and with the use of the farm as a teaching, research and demonstration facility for students, faculty, Extension Cooperators, and the general public.Direct maintenance of university farm facilities, including construction and maintenance of fences, barns, and existing farm structures. When new construction occurs or major repairs are needed, the farm manager is responsible for coordinating with facilities to ensure timely completion of all projects.Recommend purchases of new equipment such as tractors, hay balers, hay mowers, etc.Approve and organize the purchase of all supplies needed in the management of Peckham Farm.Work with departmental faculty and outside organizations to facilitate special events on the university farm.Interact with CELS faculty, assisting them with instructional and research needs. Assist with set up of Animal and Veterinary Science labs when necessary. Manage and schedule farm resources in conjunction with department Chair and faculty.Strive to continually develop the farm to become as economically self-sufficient as possible within the constraints of being a "showcase" demonstration facility, exercising strategies for achieving a degree of economic self-sufficiency including, but not limited to: Sale of livestock, Stud fees, Development of pastureland for production of hay and forage crops. In consultation with the Department of Fisheries, Animal & Veterinary Science faculty, development of novel agronomic and animal husbandry integration, and novel and cost-effective animal management strategies.OTHERDUTIESANDRESPONSIBILITIES:Assist in supervisory duties related to research programs conducted at Peckham Farm or elsewhere as assigned.Assist with the teaching of hands-on animal laboratories, supervision of students interning at Peckham Farm, and outreach programs in Animal Science as assigned.Perform other duties as required.LICENSES, TOOLSANDEQUIPMENT:Personal computers, printers; word processing, database management and spreadsheet software; farm tools, machinery, and equipment. Must have all certifications required to comply with USDA and University animal care regulations and a Pesticide Applicator's License or the ability to complete such within 6 months of hire date.

Required QualificationsREQUIRED:

1. Bachelor's degree in animal science or related field.

2. Minimum five years of professional experience in agricultural production and supervision.

3. Demonstrated experience in agriculture (i.e., livestock production, herd management, forage management, and livestock sales).

4. Demonstrated ability to operate heavy equipment common to livestock facilities (such as tractors with front-loading buckets, forklifts, and equipment related to planting, maintaining, and harvesting agricultural fields for feed and bedding for livestock).

5. Demonstrated experience with domestic hoofed livestock.

6. Demonstrated experience in assisting with birthing and postpartum processing.

7. Demonstrated strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.

8. Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills.

9. Demonstrated supervisory experience.

10. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations.

11. Must have all certifications required to comply with USDA and University animal care regulations and a Pesticide Applicator's License or the ability to complete such within 6 months of hire date.

Preferred QualificationsPREFERRED:

1. Master's degree in animal and veterinary science or related field.

2. Demonstrated experience on a university or college farm.

3. Demonstrated experience with artificial insemination (AI) or embryo transfer (ET).

4. Demonstrated knowledge of animal and veterinary science research methods and experimental designs.

5. Demonstrated experience operating, maintaining, and repairing equipment (such as hay cutters, sprayers, and balers).

6. Demonstrated business management experience.

7. Demonstrated understanding of inventory control.

8. Demonstrated experience with animal care and management under strict regulatory guidelines (i.e. IACUC, USDA, state regulations, policies, and guidelines.)
