Kelly Services is actively recruiting for a Lab Director for a Direct Hire opportunity in Greater Chicago area, IL.

Purpose (Objective):

The incumbent provides leadership and establishes policies, procedures and goals related to technical/scientific leadership, operational excellence, quality systems improvement, innovation, and method development within the Microbiology Department. The incumbent provides technical direction to laboratory management to ensure that laboratory technical, quality and operating systems are performing at or above the established goals. The incumbent provides technical consulting to clients and corporate functions such as Sales, Customer Care, Product Management and others as appropriate. The incumbent plays a leading role in improving customer perception of Client's scientific leadership and maintaining a consistent culture of scientific integrity throughout the organization.

Main activities:

? Leadership of the entire Microbiology Department

? Building and creating a high performance team

? Identifying and implementing efficiency and productivity improvements

? Talent development

? Ensures adherence to defined protocols and SOPs

? Ensure safety policies are followed

? Support Sales and Customer Care as technical expert

? Working with other functions such as Product Management and Research to add new methods in fast and error free fashion

? Continually optimize testing operations to meet customer expectations on speed and quality

? Collaborate with LD on selection, optimization and justification of equipment and all other analytical resources

Communication:
Internal Interlocutors:
Provide technical direction and supervision to laboratory personnel. Interact with other departments (sales, customer care, other location heads).

External Interlocutors:
Strong oral and written communication skills are essential to this position for effective customer contact. Customer relation skills are needed to obtain and provide information to the customer.

Knowledge:
The incumbent is experienced in the activities related to a food testing microbiology laboratory. The Director of Microbiology has demonstrated experience creating and leading technical groups to a high level of performance. The role is ideally filled by a Master Degree or PhD in Microbiology or related area of food testing focus.

Management:
This position supervises the Lab Manager(s) and indirect reports. Supervisory responsibilities include hiring, terminating, training, promoting, disciplinary actions, assignment of work and evaluating work for accuracy and completeness. This position coordinates with corporate departments to obtain information to provide quality services to the customer. Internal coordination between the various laboratory functions is needed to achieve the most accurate and timely analysis possible. This position supervises the work of all laboratory personnel.

Work Environment:
The incumbent works in the laboratory environment with proper lighting and temperature control. Occasional exposure to laboratory fumes, chemicals, and materials will occur. Eight to ten nights a month is needed to travel to laboratory locations, client facilities, and attend professional seminars.
